Aaron Ramsey will sign for Mexican side Club Universidad Nacional to continue his playing career despite speculation over his managerial future. The former Arsenal midfielder took charge at boyhood club Cardiff City for their final three games of the 2024/25 season. Ramsey was a leading candidate for the full-time role in Wales but is now set for a completely different move. Tthe 34-year-old is heading to Club Universidad Nacional, who play in the top flight of Mexican football. It could boost his chances of playing for Wales at the 2026 World Cup having previously hinted his intention of making their squad. "There's a lot to play for and that World Cup is a massive carrot being dangled, " he said in April. Club Universidad Nacional are seven-time Mexican champions and have former Celtic man Efrain Juarez as their manager. It is now back to the drawing board for the Bluebirds, who are still yet to appoint a full-time successor for Omer Riza. They were keen on Charlton boss Nathan Jones, but he committed his future to the Addicks by signing a new long-term contract. Ramsey was tasked with the near-impossible job of keeping Cardiff in the Championship during his three-match stint in the dugout. They drew 1-1 with Oxford United in his first match but a stalemate at home to West Brom in the penultimate match confirmed relegation. Cardiff will spend the 2025/26 season in League One having finished rock bottom of the Championship. Their relegation comes six years after they played Premier League football. Ramsey joined the Cardiff academy at the age of eight and went on to make 23 senior appearances before signing for Arsenal in 2008. He won three FA Cups and two Community Shields with the Gunners, scoring 64 goals and assisting 60 others across 369 matches. The midfielder had a brief one-month loan spell back at Cardiff in the 2010/11 season to make another six appearances. Ramsey permanently left Arsenal for Juventus in 2019 before a spell at Nice three years later. He then completed a second return to Cardiff in 2023 for a further outings in their club colours. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
