Eddie Howe’s side are now in concrete talks to sign Sporting Lisbon fullback Ivan Fresneda, with the Portuguese side already receiving multiple proposals for his signature. While the reigning Primeira Liga champions don’t expect to receive the price of his clause, claims from local journalist Flavio Costa have revealed that Newcastle are considering a deal in the region of €30 million, a lower fee that Sporting Lisbon are open to. Interest in the 21-year-old has skyrocketed following his Champions League displays this season, notably covering 11km and recording nine defensive contributions in his side’s 2-1 victory over reigning champions PSG. Fresneda, who won’t be available for this evening’s quarter-final clash against Arsenal, is attracting attention from other Premier League clubs, including tonight’s opposition, leaving Newcastle with a quick decision to make.
In the event of a move, Arsenal’s position in their pursuit of Tino Livramento, who ranked at No. 9 in Four Four Two's list of the best right-backs in the world, would get dramatically stronger, with a replacement for the fullback already tied down. Livramento has made 78 appearances for Newcastle United in the Premier League and was called up to the England senior squad for multiple UEFA Nations League matches in late 2024. The Englishman, who was selected for the Team of the Tournament in England’s victory at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship last year, is viewed by Mikel Arteta as a player of high enough calibre to join the title-contending makeup of their squad and increase internal competition.
