Aston Villa have rejected a bid from Everton for captain John Mc Ginn, talk SPORT understands. The Toffees' opening offer of £18million has been knocked back by Villa. It comes amid growing interest in the Scotland international from Premier League clubs. talk SPORT reported earlier this week that Newcastle have identified the 30-year-old as a potential midfield target. Eddie Howe is keen to add to his options in the area after Sean Longstaff was sold to Leeds. Meanwhile, Joe Willock also faces six weeks out after suffering a foot injury during their pre-season tour. Those absences leave Howe with just four available midfielders with just a week before the start of the new season. Newcastle kick-off their campaign away to Villa on Saturday, August 16. Mc Ginn is into the final two years of his deal at Villa Park, which expires in the summer of 2027. Since joining the club seven years ago, he has scored 30 goals in 385 appearances, having helped them win promotion back to the top-flight. Those include all but four of Villa's league matches last season as they finished sixth in the Premier League. Mc Ginn also played in all 10 of their Champions League fixtures, with Unai Emery's side reaching the quarter-finals. His performances have seen Everton join Newcastle in the race to sign him during the current window. David Moyes has already added to his midfield options ahead of the new season. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's arrival from Chelsea this week took the Toffees' summer spending past the £75million mark. Thierno Barry, Adam Aznou and Mark Travers have also arrived, whilst Carlos Alcaraz's loan from Brazilian club Flamengo was made permanent at the end of last term. It has been quite the opposite in the transfer market for Newcastle. The St. James' Park outfit have missed out on a string of targets to their Premier League rivals. Transfer targets who have moved elsewhere Benjamin Sesko is the latest player to turn down a move to the north east as he closes in on joining Manchester United. It follows Joao Pedro's switch to Chelsea, with the club also failing to agree a deal with Brentford for forward Yoane Wissa. Meanwhile, the future of star striker Alexander Isak remains uncertain after a £110million bid from Liverpool was rejected. The Swedish international is currently training away from the rest of the first-team squad. Newcastle have made just two new signings with less than a month left before the window closes. Anthony Elanga sealed a £55million move from Nottingham Forest before the loan signing of Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was completed last week. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
