Cardiff lost 5-0 on their last visit to Turf Moor, in the Championship last season League One Cardiff City claimed a Premier League scalp as they beat a much-changed Burnley side 2-1 at Turf Moor to reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. The Bluebirds took a deserved first-half lead through Joel Colwill, whose brother Rubin set up Callum Robinson five minutes later to finish an intricate team move. Burnley had made 11 changes from their Premier League draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday and it showed with a ragged display. They were gifted a route back into the tie after the interval as a misplaced pass from Cardiff goalkeeper Nathan Trott allowed Zian Flemming to score with a beautiful curling effort. But Cardiff had chances to extend their lead and were well worth their victory, earning a place in the fourth round for the first time since losing the 2012 final to Liverpool. Kpakio and Davies sign new Cardiff contracts Cardiff City This was a Championship fixture last season but, with Burnley soaring back to the Premier League with 100 points and Cardiff finishing bottom to drop down to the third tier for the first time in 22 years, the two sides met at Turf Moor two divisions apart. Whereas Burnley boss Scott Parker switched his entire team from the weekend, Cardiff's line-up showed five changes from their first defeat of the season at home to Bradford City. The Bluebirds' greater continuity – and promising start to the campaign – was evident as they controlled the opening exchanges, pressing Burnley effectively and keeping possession with relative ease. Brian Barry-Murphy's side took the lead after half an hour as their opponents failed to clear a corner, with Will Fish flicking on Perry Ng's cross into the path of Calum Chambers, who did well to slide in and square the ball for Joel Colwill to tap in. Burnley's new-look team struggled to string together any consistent patterns of play, but they should have equalised when Armando Broja was set free by Marcus Edwards' through ball, only to see his low effort kept out by Trott. Cardiff were soon on target again, as an incisive attack culminated in a low cross from Rubin Colwill to Robinson, who swept in a fine first-time finish. The visitors could have added to their lead again before the break, but a comfortable evening was made a little twitchier in the second half when Trott needlessly gave the ball to Edwards, who set up Flemming to arc an excellent shot into the top corner from 20 yards. Unperturbed, Cardiff still pushed forward with Chambers and Joel Colwill both firing narrowly wide. Trott made amends for his error by making two saves from Mike Tresor in quick succession and, although Burnley desperately flung the ball into the visitors' penalty area late on, Barry-Murphy's men stood firm.
