Pompey ensured survival in their first season back in the Championship for 12 years with a 1-0 win against Watford on Easter Monday, following on from their 5-3 triumph in a thriller at Norwich three days prior. The past few weeks at Sheffield Wednesday have been dominated by off-field issues with fans protesting against chairman Dejphon Chansiri and calling for him to leave after players and staff were paid late for their March wages. But the Owls did end a six-game winless run (D2 L4) last time out with a 2-1 home victory over Middlesbrough, though their play-off ambitions subsided some time ago. There might be a party mood in the away end to celebrate staying up to keep us all entertained. Preston v Plymouth (15: 00 BST) This is a quite simply a must-win game for Plymouth. The Pilgrims are five points adrift of safety and need a victory to avoid being relegated today after Luton's win against Coventry. Can Miron Muslic's side pull off an unlikely escape and take it to the final day? As for Preston, they should not have been in this position. "But our poor results in the last 13 games have put us where we are, " assistant manager Stuart Mc Call told BBC Radio Lancashire after the 2-1 loss at Hull on Monday made it three straight defeats. One win from their past 13 games (D12 L12) has seen the Lilywhites slowly dragged back into the relegation mix and they sit just three points above the drop zone ahead of this vital clash with the league's bottom side. Oxford v Sunderland (15: 00 BST) One more big push should do it for Oxford and secure a second season of Championship football when many had them inked-in as relegation fodder at the start of August. It has taken a change in manager with the promotion-winning, Oxford-supporting Des Buckingham sacked in December to the surprise of most supporters and the experienced Gary Rowett drafted in. A nine game unbeaten league run to start his reign helped Rowett win over those still mourning the departure of Buckingham and they have been doing just about enough ever since to the point that bettering one of either Luton or Derby's results today will see them safe. A watched clock never moves - a feeling Sunderland and their supporters know only too well. A play-off spot had been inevitable for a while and was assured on 8 April with their automatic promotion challenge having gone off the rails a fair while before. Marooned in fourth place the Black Cats have been counting the days until the play-offs start and three successive defeats ahead of today hardly seems ideal preparation for what is to come. "After this achievement [finishing fourth] we want more. Now our main focus is in the play-offs and we'll try our best to be the best team as possible, " boss Regis Le Bris told BBC Radio Newcastle Oxford would rather the team of the past three games shows up at the Kassam Stadium this afternoon. Millwall v Swansea (15: 00 BST) Millwall manager Alex Neil has been here twice before, taking charge
of a club midway through the season and overseeing a play-off triumph come May.
So could lightning strike for a third time? Neil, who led Norwich to promotion in 2015 and steered Sunderland
back to the second tier seven years later, inherited a Lions side in the bottom
half of the table – but they are now in eighth place, just three points off
sixth. “Other teams have got it in their hands, ” the Lions
boss told BBC Radio London. “Our job is to make sure that if there are any
slip-ups, any opportunities, we try and seize upon it. “There should be no apprehension,
no fear, we can only gain from this point onwards. ” Despite winning four of their past five games, the
Lions face opponents in even more impressive form – Swansea arrive at the Den
with five straight victories and have conceded only one goal in that time. Although the 11th-placed Swans are only three points behind their
rivals, it would take an extraordinary combination of results to keep them in mathematical
play-off contention even if they make it six in a row. Middlesbrough v Norwich (15: 00 BST) Middlesbrough’s season has been plagued by inconsistency but they are still in with a shout of a top-six finish - and it's in their own hands. Easter Monday’s 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, having led 1-0 and missed a penalty to double their advantage, was potentially damaging. But Boro can move into the top six with a win after Coventry’s defeat at Luton. Norwich are stranded in mid-table and their own play-off hopes ended a while back, which led the club to sack boss Johannes Hoff Thorup after a miserable run of four defeats and a draw in their past five games. Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will take charge of the remaining two games of the season with his first coming today at the Riverside. Hull v Derby (15: 00 BST) Struggling Hull haven’t won back to back games
since early October – and now would be a very good time to rectify that
statistic. It promises to be a nerve-wracking afternoon at the
MKM Stadium where the Tigers, two places and two points above the bottom three,
take on a Derby County side now back below the dotted line and equally, if not more
desperate for points. Ruben Selles’ side kept their heads above water on
Easter Monday, when Joe Gelhardt’s double earned them a crucial 2-1 victory at home to Preston, but they will need more of the same today. At the very least, Hull cannot afford defeat to a Rams
side whose own prospects of staving off the drop were dented by their home
defeat to Luton on Good Friday, only for a 3-1 success at West Brom three days later to spark renewed hope. The next 90 minutes could go a long way towards
answering the question of whether John Eustace made the right call when he ditched
Blackburn to become Derby boss back in February… Cardiff v West Brom (15: 00 BST) From the moment they conceded a goal inside the opening 20 minutes in their first game of the season at home to Sunderland, Cardiff have been swimming against the tide. That 2-0 defeat was followed by five more from their opening seven games and only one point gathered from a late equaliser in the South Wales derby at Swansea. A run of three more losses in which they failed to score precipitated the end of Erol Bulut's managerial reign and things briefly looked up when Omer Riza oversaw four wins from his first seven games. But the Bluebirds never truly escaped the clutches of the bottom three and Riza went the same way as Bulut on Easter Saturday with Aaron Ramsey the lucky recipient of the 'see if you can keep us up' prize. Defeat today could relegate them to League One for the first time since 2003 but hope might be at hand in the form of their opponents. Only Preston (2) have taken fewer points than West Brom's three from their past six matches - a run which cost boss Tony Mowbray his job on Monday with their play-off hopes now over. The Baggies are winless in 14 away trips and begging for the end of the season - all of which might help Cardiff and every little bit of assistance is needed right now. Blackburn v Watford (15: 00 BST) Funny thing football, more so if your team play in the Championship. When Valerien Ismael stepped into the shoes of departed head coach John Eustace at the end of February Blackburn were in sixth place. Seven games and only two points later Rovers were 12th and nine points off the pace - season over? Well, as we said, it is the Championship. From nowhere Ismael has got a tune out of his team to reel-off three wins and with games against Watford today and play-off bound Sheffield United next weekend who is to say they can't bridge the four-point gap and gatecrash the top six? Watford fans may gaze at their opponents a little enviously having seen their own play-off challenge subside on the back of a run of just one win from seven games and three successive defeats. The Hornets have cut a rather moribund bunch in recent weeks - "We must play well in our last two games to finish the season well, it's been a really tough period, " said boss Tom Cleverley. Given Blackburn's form it might get a bit tougher today. .. #bbcefl A quick reminder of the permutations: We still have plenty more to come with eight more games kicking off at 15: 00. Let's turn our attention there so please don't go anywhere. #bbcefl How big might that 90th minute goal be for Luton? ! They are out of the bottom three and up to 20th, with all their rivals at the bottom of the table very soon to play. #bbcefl Burnley's win sees them move back to the top of the table with Leeds not playing until Monday night. Coventry stay sixth but Middlesbrough and Millwall are still to play FT: Luton 1-0 Coventry Steve Ogrizovic Ex-Coventry City goalkeeper on BBC CWR It is tough, this great game of ours knows how to break hearts. Coventry defended valiantly but they've thrown away a point at the end. It's not the end but they have got to go and get a win against Middlesbrough. Luton 1-0 Coventry What an ending to this game for Luton. What a time to win three games in a row for the first time this season. What a time for Shandon Baptiste to score his first goal for the club. The Hatters have given themselves a real chance of Championship survival with a huge three points. As for Coventry, it's a hammer blow to their play-off hopes and the manner of the goal they conceded will disappoint Frank Lampard. Middlesbrough will go above the Sky Blues in sixth if they win against Norwich this afternoon. Luton 1-0 Coventry Coventry have one last chance to send it forward. .. But Luton are able to clear. Is that it? Luton 1-0 Coventry Luton are on the brink of winning three games in a row for the first time this season. The Hatters are on the brink of moving out of the relegation zone for the first time since 18 January. It will be 18 points from nine games if Matt Bloomfield's side can hold on for one more minute. Luton 1-0 Coventry There were six minutes added on amid the late drama. We've played just over half of that. Luton 1-0 Coventry Clive Eakin BBC CWR Sport It's heartbreak for Coventry. After all of their hard work they've conceded in the 90th minute. That is really hard for the Sky Blues to take. Luton are heading for the win meaning one more win in their final game of the season will save them. QPR 0-5 Burnley Burnley lead the table again after that resounding win - and they've made up five of those 14 goals they'd need to overtake Leeds to the title, assuming their rivals win their last two games. Two goals for Zian Flemming and two for Jeremy Sarmiento after Josh Cullen had opened the scoring. QPR were rarely in it, to be honest. Shandon Baptiste (90 mins) Oh. My. Word. Bedlam in the stands at Kenilworth Road. It's an absolute calamity at the back for Coventry. The ball comes into the box and goalkeeper Brad Collins comes flying out of his goal and clatters into the back of Liam Kitching as he tries to head clear. It drops straight to Shandon Baptiste on the edge of the box and he sends a low shot goalwards. .. Luis Binks tries to clear it on the line but cannot keep it out. How big will that goal prove to be in Luton's battle for survival? Not to mention Coventry's play-off hopes. .. Last Updated 26th April 2025 at 15: 00 Please Note: All times UK.
