The Tigers escaped Sky Bet Championship relegation on the final day of the season on goal difference having been bottom when Selles was appointed in December. The 41-year-old Spaniard is the third manager sacked by Hull owner Acun Ilicali in the last 12 months and the club now begin their search for a fifth permanent boss since the Turkish media mogul took control in early 2022. Hull said in a statement: 'Following a thorough review of football operations after a challenging campaign, the club feels a change in leadership is necessary to move the team forward in line with our ambitions. ' Hull went into the final day of the season in the bottom three and a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth was enough to save them, while Selles won nine of his 27 league games in charge. Speaking after that result, Selles had admitted that the season had been a 'really difficult one'. 'We didn't want to do it on the last day. We hoped we could do it before. 'I'm proud of everyone, putting everything they have into the game. We went 1-0 up, then they equalise. 'Knowing the other results, (it was about) just managing the tempo of the game. 'Today was one of those days that you need to show that you can cope with the pressure. The boys did it amazingly. Selles had signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Tigers when he quit as Reading's head coach to replace Tim Walter. Walter had been appointed as successor to Liam Rosenior, who was sacked in May 2024 after guiding Hull to a seventh-placed finish, missing out on the play-offs by three points.
