PSV 1-3 Union Saint-Gilloise Union Saint-Gilloise enjoyed a dream Champions League debut with a historic success at PSV Eindhoven. The Belgian side won their first Pro League title in 90 years last term to qualify for the competition for the first time in their history. And they rose to the occasion, getting off to the perfect start with a ninth-minute opener from the penalty spot after Ricardo Pepi caught former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess in the box with a high challenge. Promise David stepped up to become the club's first Champions League goalscorer as he calmly slotted past PSV keeper Matej Kovar. Union doubled their lead in the 39th minute to silence the home fans at Philips Stadion thanks to a terrific solo goal from Anouar Ait El Hadj. The Belgian midfielder latched on to a loose ball in the middle of the park before storming into the box and hammering home a low strike. And Kevin Mac Allister - brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis - wrapped up the perfect evening for Union when he bundled home from a corner with nine minutes left. New manager, new philosophy, new direction, 4 wins from 5, 1 goal conceded.

Am not fussed about "attractive" football right now, am fully invested in Frank's plan! !

COYS! !! Graeme, Wick Real Madrid 2-1 Marseille Los Blancos were handed an early blow in their win over Marseille when Trent Alexander-Arnold pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury after only three minutes. That was only his third start in five games since making his move to the Spanish capital from Liverpool this summer. Trent was left out of Thomas Tuchel's most recent England squad for their World Cup qualifying wins over Andorra and Serbia. The club is yet to confirm how long the 26-year-old will be out for. Real Madrid 2-1 Marseille Kylian Mbappe scored two penalties as 10-man Real Madrid battled to victory over Marseille in their Champions League opener. Timothy Weah had opened the scoring for Marseille in the 22nd minute, beating Thibaut Courtois with a powerful strike after former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood stole possession from Arda Guler in the middle of the pitch. But their lead lasted just six minutes as Mbappe, who had come close to scoring in the early stages with an acrobatic bicycle kick, converted his first penalty after Geoffrey Kondogbia had brought down Rodrygo in the box. Dani Carvajal was sent off with 18 minutes left after he faced off with Geronimo Rulli and moved his head towards the Marseille goalkeeper. But the 15-time European champions emerged victorious thanks to Mbappe, who twice stepped up to slam spot-kicks past Rulli, taking his club tally to six in five games this season. Absolutely no issue with our attack, apart from players needing to bed in and find some rhythm. Our bigger problem is in midfield - we need a proper six. James, Southampton Juventus 4-4 Borussia Dortmund The career path of Lloyd Kelly is somewhat of a strange one. The 26-year-old defender - who can play centrally or as a left back - came through the academy at Bristol City and went on to play 48 times before a move to Bournemouth in 2019. That summer he was part of the England squad that failed to make it out of their group at the Under-21 European Championships. He spent five years on the South coast but was signed by Newcastle last summer on a free transfer - only to join Juventus on loan in February after making just 10 appearances for the Magpies. Juve had an obligation to buy Kelly for £20m this summer and he has since played every minute for the club so far this season, scoring against Inter Milan at the weekend as well as last night's equaliser. Juventus 4-4 Borussia Dortmund The game of the night in the Champions League took place in Turin. After a rather pedestrian first half, EIGHT second-half goals saw Juventus play out a 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund found themselves in the lead twice through Karim Adeyemi and then Felix Nmecha, but goals from Kenan Yildiz and Dusan Vlahovic brought the home side level. The visitors thought they had won it after regaining the lead and adding a fourth but two goals in stoppage time saw Juve secure a point. Vlahovic scored his second before former England youth international Lloyd Kelly found the equaliser in the 96th minute to spark wild celebrations at the Allianz Stadium. You could see how empty parts of the stands were. Villarreal fans hardly even showed up! I hope the club learn from the greed. Dan, Newmarket What do we think Tottenham fans? Thumbs up if you think the club got its pricing policy wrong for this one, thumbs down if you don't. Benfica 2-3 Qarabag It was a stunning, historic comeback from Qarabag at Benfica as they become the first Azerbaijani side to win a Champions League main draw match. Having qualified for Europe's premier competition for the first time in eight years, Gurban Gurbanov's side found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit after just 16 minutes following goals from Enzo Barrenechea and Vangelis Pavlidis. The Azerbaijan champions halved the deficit on the half-hour mark through a fine Leandro Andrade finish before team-mate Kady Borges struck the foot of the post. Three minutes after the break, Gurbanov's side silenced the Estadio da Luz with the leveller. Marko Jankovic's defence-splitting pass found Camilo Duran and he expertly found the far post on his Champions League debut. Substitute Oleksii Kashchuk got the historic winning goal five minutes from time, picking the ball up with his back to goal before finishing brilliantly on the turn. Benfica 2-3 Qarabag Jose Mourinho is considering becoming Bruno Lage's replacement at Benfica after he was sacked following Tuesday's Champions League defeat against Qarabag. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager's side threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 against the side from Azerbaijan at Estadio da Luz. Club president Rui Costa said they intend to have a new manager in place by Saturday but would not be drawn on speculation that Mourinho is their preferred option. BBC Sport has been told Mourinho is open to returning to work in Portugal, 21 years after he left for Chelsea. Craig Nelson BBC Sport reporter We still have plenty of reaction to come from Arsenal and Tottenham's opening victories, but let's have a quick look at Tuesday's other games. There has been a development at Benfica following a shock 3-2 defeat at home to Azerbaijan Premier League side Qarabag. .. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say I'm no Arsenal fan, absolutely far from it. But I've got to say, you guys have one hell of a bench there. I wouldn't be worried about depth in the slightest, I could barely tell that you had 3-4 first team players injured. Makes me worried for the weekend. Athletic Club 0-2 Arsenal Alex Howell BBC Sport football reporter Gabriel Martinelli has been aware of the criticism and debate from fans about his place in the team, but those two moments of play for the goals showed why Mikel Arteta has kept faith with the 24-year-old. Arteta knows he can trust him in the big games, but his attacking output had dropped as his confidence left him. The winger is one of the fastest in the Premier League and Leandro Trossard's pass showed just how dangerous Martinelli can be when he gets the ball in the right areas of the pitch. Arteta has previously said that he needed a bigger squad as the standards have raised, and due to the high number of games his players have to play throughout the season. The Arsenal manager named five of his eight new summer signings in the starting XI and was able to introduce quality from the bench, something that was lacking last season as injuries hit his squad. Trossard is never happy to be on the bench but Arteta will be delighted to have players of his and Martinelli's ability to turn to when he wants to impact games. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Having 'starters' and 'finishers' was a ploy Sarina Wiegman made an artform out of in the Lionesses' Euros win this summer - sending on subs like Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang to turn matches in their favour. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say As an Arsenal fan last season, looking at a team with Saliba, Odegaard, Saka and Havertz out injured was a nightmare. Last night we not only had them comfortably covered, we had some of last year's starters ready to come off the bench and finish the game. Tom, London Athletic Club 0-2 Arsenal Alex Howell BBC Sport football reporter Mikel Arteta says the "finishers" in his Arsenal squad could be "more important" than those in the starting line-up this season - a concept he says he has taken from rugby union. Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard both scored - and assisted one another - after coming off the bench to guide the Gunners to a 2-0 win at Spanish side Athletic Club in their opening Champions League game. Martinelli has had a tough time in recent months - struggling for form and being dropped to the bench, with new arrival Eberechi Eze preferred on the left wing. Belgium forward Trossard, meanwhile, has been limited to just three substitute appearances so far in 2025-26 after playing 56 times last season. Does that mean they are now any less important? Not according to Arteta, who said he "loves" the way players are often referred to as "finishers" in rugby union. Asked about the mentality of the players left on the bench, he said: "They are at least equally important, or more important. We have discussed that. "The finishers are going to be more important this season sometimes than the starters. "We can change the game there, especially with the intensity that we play and teams start to drop off. I'm very pleased to see that. Right, back to Arsenal. .. Tottenham 1-0 Villarreal Gary Rose BBC Sport journalist Tottenham have conceded just the one goal so far this season - in the 1-0 loss to Bournemouth. That is a big improvement on how they started the previous campaign, when they conceded five in their first five games. In the Premier League they have kept three clean sheets already - meaning they are just two away from equalling their total for the whole of last season. The more solid platform is potentially coming at a cost, however, with their one shot on target against Villarreal the second time in their last three games they had managed so few efforts on goal. Manager Thomas Frank knows this is an area that has to improve. "We have a very good foundation to stand on in terms of our defensive organisation and I think it's good and we gave little away, " he said. "This is the Champions League against a good team. Also, I knew we took a step forward against West Ham, offensively is the area we need to get better. " Last Updated 17th September 2025 at 02: 22 Please Note: All times UK.
