Joe Rindl BBC Sport Been a while since I've been called deluded so I'm going to stick my neck out. I don't think many people believe a Europa League title for Spurs or Man Utd will make their squad better than Arsenal's. But trophies are trophies, and whoever wins the Europa League will, on paper at least, end up having a better season than the Gunners. That's what the history books will say. Now, bring on the thumbs. #bbcfootball, via Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) I agree with those saying that Arteta is deluded if he genuinely believes that Arsenal have been the best team in the Champions League this season. But he's not quite as deluded as those that think winning the Europa League or Europa Conference would make their team better than Arsenal! You only have to look at the team left in those competitions to know they're second or third tier! Tim #bbcfootball, via Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Is Arteta actually wrong? Finished 3rd in league phase. Blew away PSV. Blew away Madrid. Outperformed PSG on XG 5. 11-3. 08 (0. 75 from the dubious penalty). Like he said it’s came down to final third quality (which arsenal will address in summer) and world class goalkeeping. Sometimes he can put his point across wrong but he has an argument. Sean, Aberdeen #bbcfootball, via Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Absolutely can’t stand Arteta's delusion. It sounds like he is lying to himself and the fans to make them feel better about what was a severely underwhelming two performances. The first leg in particular was really poor from both the players and the fans at the stadium. You need to have something to take into the second leg and Arsenal never really gave it a proper go. Arsenal as a club are not built for the big time. Ryan, Bayern Munich fan Just joining? Welcome! It's been a lively morning as we react to Arsenal's Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris St-Germain. Here's what we've been discussing: Keep your messages coming in. Plenty more to come as we dissect last night's match, Arsenal's season and what next for the club and Arteta? #bbcfootball, via Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) We have had a good run in the UCL, but overall the season has been very disappointing. Regardless of the bad luck with injuries, I feel it was a failure to improve the squad last summer. We needed a goal scorer and an upgraded LW. During the season we have been sussed out by other clubs. Anon FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg) John Murray BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent PSG were worthy winners. Arsenal were beaten by the better team over the two legs. After beating Manchester City in the league phase, PSG have done the England treble - knocking out Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal. I think the key phase of this match was the opening 20 minutes when Arsenal were very good, but they couldn't find a magic moment that Mikel Arteta was calling for. Joe Rindl BBC Sport That's a properly damning stat. Arsenal have also won the most Champions League games out of all the sides who have never lifted the trophy. By the way, I meant to tell you earlier that we have a new poll at the top of this page. "Who are the best team in the Champions League this season? " Give it a go. FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg) This game was Arsenal's 201st match in the Champions League - the most of any side who have never lifted the trophy. The Gunners have also now failed to progress from each of their past four major cup semi-finals (2020-21 Europa League, 2021-22 League Cup, 2024-25 League Cup, 2024-25 Champions League) – their longest ever run at this stage of competitions. FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg) Arsenal Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice speaking to TNT Sports: "We're all desperate for it [a trophy]. That's why we play football, we want to win trophies, we want to be at the pinnacle, winning stuff. For whatever reason it hasn't been meant to be. "We've been really close and it's not good enough. Arsenal deserve to be pushing for trophies and winning things but there's not a lot more we can be doing. A lot of superstars have suffered defeats to come out on top. "It hurts, you see the boys, the manager. We wanted to be in Munich but this doesn't define us and we'll be back. " Joe Rindl BBC Sport I'll take it. My own fault for the thumbs down this morning - don't know why I woke up picturing Ben Chilwell playing for Arsenal and then decided to share it with you. Won't happen again. #bbcfootball, Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Since you're normally downvoted Joe, guessing that the number of upvotes means it does sound okay. Cheers. James FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg) Matthew Upson Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live There are so many positives about what Mikel Arteta has done with this Arsenal team, they're a very good side. For them to go to the next step, it is looking at the finer detail, but for me there is one glaring thing. It's that position that we are always talking about - a player that is going to produce those goals. Other players will benefit form that as well, Bukayo Saka will get more space, Gabriel Martinelli will have more space. When PSG break away you always feel they are going to put the ball in the back of the net. Arsenal don't have that level. Joe Rindl BBC Sport I'd go with played alright - certainly didn't embarrass themselves, but were beaten by a very, very good PSG side. Sound OK to you? #bbcfootball, Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) As someone who didn't watch the match, I'm really confused. According to Arteta they were the best team in the UCL, and according to the downvoted Sam (7. 44) and Christian (7. 47) they played well. But according to the upvoted Matt (7. 31) they played like Pulis' Stoke. So, which is it? James #bbcfootball, Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Despite the loss Arsenal are still rebuilding the squad and the club culture, no need to panic yet. In 2020 and 2021 Arsenal finished 8th followed by 5th in 2022 as the process started, now we could be 2nd for the following 3 years. We missed Champions League football for years and now we reached the quarters last year and the semis this year. Yes football is about winning trophies but being amongst the top teams gives you a chance to win. Get a striker please Mikel. Dave FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg) Arsenal Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports: "When you look at the two games their best player on the pitch has been the goalkeeper, he has been the difference for them in the tie. We were very close, much closer than the result showed but unfortunately we are out. I am very proud of the players. "After 20 minutes it should have been 3-0. There is something extra you need to go your way in the competition and it didn't. We were very close and for long periods of both games we were much better than them but we are not there and that has to hurt. "If we want to win this competition we have to realise that. There are certain things that are on us. You shouldn't just be understanding we are out. That is not the way I look at it. "100% I don't think there's been a better team [than Arsenal] in the competition from what I have seen, but we are out. This competition is about the boxes and in both boxes are the strikers and the goalkeepers and theirs was the best in both games. " #bbcfootball, Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Arteta sounds deluded when he says things like that. If Chelsea and/or Spurs win the Europa Conference or Europa League, Arsenal won't even be the best team in London this year, let alone Europe. Rob #bbcfootball, Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) If Tottenham win the Europa League, have they had a better season than Arsenal? Anon FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg) Arsenal Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard speaking to TNT Sports: "We gave it a proper go. We started the game really well. We were on the front foot, had the momentum, a few big chances but in the end it wasn't enough. Between the boxes we did well inside the two over the two games we weren't good enough. Credit to their goalkeeper who made amazing saves. It wasn't enough and that's painful. "In the boxes, especially today what we did with the ball between the boxes we dominated the ball and took the control of the game from the start. We were not strong enough in the boxes and that's where we lost it. "It's painful, we wanted to do the big thing, a big goal in the league and the Champions League. Massive disappointment but we have to stay strong and together. Take the lessons, take the pain and use it to come back stronger. "We have to learn from this. We did a lot of good things but it's not enough. In front of goal is where games are decided and that's where we have to be sharper. We have to use this pain in a good way.
