Ref cams have made a huge impression on Chelsea fans during their Club World Cup victory against Los Angeles FC. The Blues beat their MLS opponents 2-0 on Monday night to get off to a winning start in Group D. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez were on the scoresheet, with the former netting an excellent goal with 34 minutes played. He found the target at Hugo Lloris' near post to cap off a fine move that was recorded on referee Jesus Valenzuela's camera. Cole Palmer passed the ball to Nicolas Jackson, who breezed past LAFC captain Aaron Long and then sent Neto through on goal. Valenzuela then sprinted towards the Chelsea winger to get close footage of him cutting inside and then firing in for 1-0. Whilst Blues fans can see the quality of the goal on normal television camera replays, the ref cam offered an incredible angle of the action. Supporters seem to back the technology as one on X simply said: "It’s beautiful. " "Ref cam will be a huge blessing in English football, " a second added. One fan tagged the Premier League and asked: "Can we have this? " "Wow. We need this in the PL, " another said in agreement. FIFA Referees Committee chairman and iconic official Pierluigi Collina revealed the introduction of ref cams before the tournament. "Having a camera worn by the referee will give the TV viewers the possibility to put themselves in the referee’s shoes and they will watch what the referee can see live during the match, " he said. "It's a new experience. It’s also understanding what a referee can see during different phases of play. "And, yeah, I think it will also offer the possibility to TV viewers to understand how the referee’s job is difficult. " The Premier League released their own ref cam footage towards the end of the 2023/24 season. Crystal Palace thrashed Manchester United 4-0 at Selhurst Park, with referee Jarred Gillett wearing the technology on his chest. It was part of a one-off programme produced by Premier League Productions and it's unclear if it will make a return to the top flight. After Neto's goal, Chelsea scored their second against LAFC late in the second half through Fernandez. New signing Liam Delap assisted the Argentine midfielder in what was an impressive debut off the bench. Both Chelsea and LAFC played in front of a sparse crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The venue can accommodate 71, 000 fans but only 22, 137 spectators were in attendance.
