Crystal Palace have not beaten Sunderland at Selhurst Park since 2013 At a glance Crystal Palace are yet to win at home in the league this season Robin Roefs makes late saves to earn point for Sunderland Sunderland still seeking first away win of season PLAYER RATER Crystal Palace were held to a frustrating goalless draw by newly promoted Sunderland at Selhurst Park. Both sides struggled to find any rhythm in a drab and underwhelming opening 45 minutes. Palace winger Yeremy Pino looked the most likely to break the deadlock but fired wide on two occasions after finding pockets of space on the edge of the box. Jean-Philippe Mateta struck the game's first shot on target in the 49th minute, forcing a save out of Robin Roefs with Pino's rebound blocked away for a corner. That double chance brought about hope of the match sparking into life but Palace were unable to build any momentum and Sunderland never got going. The Black Cats looked fatigued as the game entered the final 15 minutes and had to rely on Roefs to get away with a share of the points. Roefs was on call to deny Daichi Kamada - getting down quickly to turn away the attempt as it fizzed across the slick surface - before standing tall to palm away a close-range attempt from Mateta. The draw keeps Palace sitting eighth in the Premier League with Sunderland remaining sixth. Have your say on Crystal Palace’s performance What did you make of Sunderland’s display? Palace are still adjusting to life without last season's top scorer Eberechi Eze, who left for Arsenal in the summer, and also weren't helped by the absence of the injured Ismaila Sarr. Eze and Sarr were the perfect complement for Mateta last term but without either of them on the field today, the French striker lacked service and looked isolated. Pino, who was signed as Eze's replacement, showed signs of why Palace parted with £26m to bring him in from Villarreal but offers a completely different kind of attacking threat. The Spain forward regularly drifted into central areas rather than staying wide and putting in crosses for last season's top scorer Mateta. It did start to click a little better late in the game as Sunderland tired but the Eagles came up against a goalkeeper in form. The draw means Palace are on the longest unbeaten run of any current Premier League side, avoiding defeat in each of their last 10 games - winning three and drawing seven. Sunderland invested heavily over the summer - spending in the region of £180m on 15 permanent deals and two loan signings - and they looked like a team that still needs time to gel. Regis le Bris was without talented winger Enzo le Fee and opted to start Wilson Isidor after the striker had scored twice from the bench to start the campaign. But Isidor, who scored 13 times for the Black Cats last term, was unable to impose himself on the game as the visitors failed to register a single shot on target. Roefs was Sunderland's standout performer and the reason they held on for a draw. Picking up victories at the Stadium of Light will be the primary task for Sunderland - back in the top flight for the first time since 2016-17 - so a point on the road will be warmly accepted. Crystal Palace return to action on Tuesday at 20: 00 against Championship outfit Millwall in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Sunderland lost in the opening round of the Carabao Cup so don't have a midweek fixture to prepare for. The Black Cats welcome Aston Villa to the Stadium of Light for their next outing at 14: 00 on Sunday, 21 September. The away team has won five of the last six Premier League meetings between Crystal Palace and Sunderland (D1) – in eight games between the sides, the only home win was in August 2013, Palace winning 3-1 at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace are on the longest current unbeaten league run of any Premier League side (9 – W3 D6). They last went 10 top-flight games unbeaten between May and October 1990 (12). Crystal Palace have lost just one of their last 16 Premier League matches against newly promoted sides (W10 D5), losing 2-1 to Luton Town in November 2023. Sunderland have won two of their three Premier League games this season (L1), the first newly promoted side to win 2+ of their opening three matches of a campaign in the division since Leeds United in 2020-21 (also 2). Only two promoted clubs have started a Premier League season with three wins in their first four games: Nottingham Forest in 1994-95 and Bolton Wanderers in 2001-02. Crystal Palace have applied the most high-intensity pressures to opponents in the Premier League this season (1, 081), with winger Ismaïla Sarr making the joint-most of any player (199), while Sarr (130, 1st), Daniel Muñoz (107, 2nd) and Tyrick Mitchell (103, 4th) are all in the top-four for high intensity pressures in their own half. Sunderland are yet to score a first half goal in the Premier League this season, having just 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes – in the second half, the Black Cats have scored five goals from 20 shots, with only Liverpool scoring more second half goals in the division this term (6). Ismaïla Sarr has had a hand in nine goals in his last 12 Crystal Palace starts in all competitions (6 goals, 3 assists). Since the first game in this run on 26 April, only Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández has more goals and assists combined among Premier League players (5 goals, 8 assists). Crystal Palace midfielder Will Hughes is the only player to be booked in all three Premier League games so far this season. Four players have been yellow carded in each of their side’s first four matches of season in the competition: Chris Morris for Middlesbrough in 1995-96, Paul Williams for Coventry in 1997-98, James Perch for Newcastle in 2010-11, and Adam Smith for Bournemouth in 2022-23. Despite not starting a single Premier League game yet, Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor has netted two goals in three games in 2025-26. He's one of four players to score two or more goals in his first three Premier League games without starting any, along with Alan Smith in 1998 (2), Hernán Crespo in 2005 (3), and Álvaro Negredo in 2013 (2).
