Tony Yogane scored his first senior goal to give Dundee the lead At a glance Motherwell concede first goal in six hours and 26 minutes Yogane scores first senior goal to give Dundee lead Slattery levels with impressive free-kick Substitute Robertson nets winner for Dundee Dundee leapfrogged Aberdeen to move up to eighth in the Scottish Premiership after inflicting title-chasing Motherwell's first league defeat since December. It means Steven Pressley's side have narrowed the gap to Dundee United in seventh to just two points and ease their relegation fears. Motherwell, who had the opportunity to put pressure on Rangers and Celtic above them, suffered their first defeat in the league since 27 December at Ibrox. Despite a typically impressive start for the visitors, it was Dundee who struck first. Moments after a stunning save from goalkeeper Jon Mc Cracken to keep out Lukas Fadinger, Dundee raced up the other end to open the scoring. Drey Wright's ball to the back post was met by Tony Yogane and the on-loan Brentford midfielder smashed the ball off the ground and through the legs of goalkeeper Calum Ward for the first senior goal of his career. Motherwell were dealt a further blow when influential midfielder Fadinger had to be replaced before the break. However, Jens Berthel Askou's side flew out the traps in the second half and had numerous chances to level the tie. Callum Slattery slashed wide, Elliot Watt fired over the bar and Elijah Just's looping free-kick zipped over the crossbar, but nothing stuck. Ashley Hay, who replaced Simon Murray in the second half, thought he had doubled Dundee's advantage, but the offside flag was quickly raised. Another wave of Motherwell attack passed and Dundee broke again as Cameron Congreve smashed an effort off the Motherwell crossbar. Slattery fired Motherwell level with 10 minutes to play with a thunderous free-kick that flew beyond Mc Cracken in the Dundee goal. However, Joe Westley found fellow substitute Fin Robertson inside the Motherwell box following a lovely passage of play and the 23-year-old slotted beyond the Motherwell goalkeeper to restore Dundee's advantage. Pressley's men are now 17 points clear of bottom side Livingston, while Motherwell remain 10 points off leaders Heart of Midlothian. Motherwell found themselves in a position they have not often been in this season – having to come from behind. It was only the second time this calendar year that the Steelmen have been behind in a game. When Yogane's strike hit the back of the net after 32 minutes, it had been six hours and 26 minutes since Calum Ward last conceded a goal. They huffed and puffed, but it took Slattery's wonderful free-kick to draw the visitors level. It was an unusually sloppy performance from Askou's men. They had 25 crosses, none of which could be turned home by lauded forward Tawanda Maswanhise, who looked a far cry from his usual self. Just one of their 21 shots (nine on target) found the back of the net and their 73 final-third entries came to nothing. A win would have had them one point behind Rangers in third, two off Celtic in second and seven off the league leaders, but the defeat was hardly fatal. They are still comfortably in the top six and very much in the mix for Europe, sitting seven points ahead of Hibernian and still on course for a very good season. For Dundee, that win could be season-defining. They have moved themselves further away from the drop zone and 10 above Kilmarnock in the relegation play-off spot. Pressley mentioned before the game about his side finally finding goals but struggling to keep them out at the other end, but they managed to do that this time. Mc Cracken made eight saves - only Slatterty's wonder goal got past the Dundee shot stopper - and their defence won 18 tackles and made 12 interceptions. Now Pressley's men have put themselves in a position where a win against Dundee United next weekend would see them leapfrog their city rivals into seventh place. Dundee head coach Steven Pressley: "I'm really proud of the players today, because that was an enormous effort against a really top Motherwell side that ask so many different questions of you, but the players found the answers. " Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou: "Disappointed about the result. I'm happy with the effort, it was there. "I think we really tried to up the tempo and had some really good moments in the first half but didn't take them. " The Dundee derby is up next for Steven Pressley's side. They host city rivals United on Sunday, 15 March (14: 00 GMT). Motherwell are away to reigning champions Celtic the previous day (15: 00 GMT).
