David Mc Goldrick got his move to Barnsley this summer in very unorthodox fashion. .. The EFL veteran departed hometown club Notts County for the League One side earlier this month. Mc Goldrick re-joined the Magpies in 2023 and went on to make 87 appearances, scoring 30 goals. However, despite his close connection with the club, at 37 years old, he opted to have another shot at a higher level. After his contract expired, the striker, who has played a stunning 576 games across the EFL, signed a one-year deal at Barnsley. The move saw him join ex-teammate Conor Hourihane, who was appointed Tykes boss in April. The pair played together for Sheffield United, Derby County and also for their national side, the Republic of Ireland. They have built a close relationship because of that and the friendship helped bring Mc Goldrick to Barnsley. In a Tik Tok video posted by the club, the EFL legend explained how the transfer came about in a strange way. He said: "We were at a wedding and I'd had a few wines. .. "I went a put a blank piece of paper with a five-year contract in front of him, but he didn't sign it! " The striker continued: "He's a friend and we have the same friendship groups, in terms of players that we played with. "We talked then, there were other things in the pipeline for me, I didn't know what I was doing, I wanted some time. "And then we made the decision, had a good conversation to come here and here I am. " Barnsley boss Hourihane has also spoken about the odd situation that led to Mc Goldrick joining his squad. He told Football Heaven: "First and foremost, I've played with Didzy at Sheffield United, Derby and Ireland, so I know Didzy very, very well. We've grown quite close over the years. "I was at the wedding of a previous Derby player and he was there, because me and Didzy would be close to the player. "And he was like 'Come on, can you sign me? Can you sign me? ' And that's how it kind of started really. "I knew straight away when there was an opportunity to sign him that I have to try and fight tooth and nail to get him over the line and get him done. "His quality. His mentality. How he is going to handle the dressing room. The experience that he brings, just in terms of full package. He's been huge in terms of impact and he'll continue to be that. " Barnsley, with Hourihane and Mc Goldrick, get their League One season started on Saturday, taking on Plymouth Argyle at 3pm. talk SPORT will have live updates of all the updates as part of Game Day Live with Adrian Durham, Micky Gray and Shaun Derry.
