This video can not be played Brentford surge past Everton with thrilling second‑half display At a glance Brentford take lead through Igor Thiago's 12th goal of the season Nathan Collins puts visitors 2-0 up early in second half Thiago makes it 3-0 to the Bees only a minute later before sealing hat-trick Goals from Beto and Thierno Barry prove mere consolation for Everton PLAYER RATER Igor Thiago scored a hat-trick to end his brief goal drought in style as Brentford leapfrogged Everton in the Premier League with a comfortable victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Thiago, who failed to score in six league games in December, now has 14 goals this season - with only Manchester City's Erling Haaland in front of him. "Strikers live and breathe [goals] and get a lot of confidence from it, " Brentford boss Keith Andrews told BBC Match of the Day. "[Thiago has] played well without scoring recently. His performance today was sensational. He deserves the accolades. " The hosts began brightly as Dwight Mc Neil forced a save out of Caoimhin Kelleher on four minutes before James Tarkowski's header from the resulting corner was cleared off the line by Thiago. And the Brazilian then made an impact at the other end as the visitors went ahead against the run of play in the 11th minute. The striker arrived in the six-yard area to guide Vitaly Janelt's precise cross past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his 12th goal of the league campaign. Pickford had to advance off the line to deny Thiago a second, while former Liverpool keeper Kelleher's brilliant reflex save to keep out Thierno Barry's low header preserved Brentford's slender lead at the break. Everton's players were met with boos from the stands as the half-time whistle blew and their day went from bad to worse when Brentford captain Nathan Collins doubled the visitors' lead with a glancing header from Janelt's corner in the 50th minute. Only a minute later, Thiago got his second as Kevin Schade ran on to a through ball from Mathias Jensen but was stopped by Jake O'Brien, only for the striker to pick up the loose ball and slot past Pickford. Beto, a half-time substitute, pulled one back for Everton with a header in the 66th minute but Thiago completed his hat-trick after latching on to a long ball from Collins and dinking past Pickford. Barry then popped in at the far post to head home a ball from Jack Grealish for Everton's second, but Brentford held on for a rare away victory. Brentford are up to seventh place with 30 points after 20 games, while Everton fall to 12th but are only two points behind the Bees. What did you make of Everton’s display? Have your say on Brentford’s performance This video can not be played Damsgaard 'epitomised bravery' - Andrews Brentford had momentum heading into their maiden outing at Everton's new stadium despite goals drying up for top scorer Thiago. The striker was without a goal since a double against Burnley on 29 November, when he had moved only three behind Haaland in the Golden Boot race. But after a goalless December, Thiago returned to form on Merseyside with a neat finish that came after Janelt intercepted a sloppy pass from Everton skipper Tarkowski. The striker looked lively throughout the afternoon, scoring his side's third in the 51st minute before adding another with two minutes left to become the third player to score a Premier League hat-trick for the club after Ivan Toney and Schade. "I knew I was going to score that [third] goal, " Thiago told Sky Sports. Captain Collins said of Thiago: "He's one of the hardest-working men I've ever seen and he deserves everything he gets. " The 24-year-old striker continues to make a strong case to be included in Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil squad during a World Cup year, having never won a cap at any age level of international football so far. For manager Andrews, his striker's return to scoring form came coupled with a much-needed away win, having previously collected just six of their 27 points on the road. Both aspects were welcome shots in the arm heading into the second half of the season. "It's about consistency, " Andrews said. "I feel the team and squad and club have taken good steps forward in the last few weeks. They have earned that, to play in this way. "We are very respectful of each game. We just keep working hard. [There is] a real appetite to improve all the time and push each other and see where we go. " Thiago's rise from bricklayer to Brentford's new goal hero This video can not be played Everton were 'disappointing defensively' - Moyes David Moyes had set his sights on European football for Everton after their impressive start to the season. But Sunday's defeat by Brentford, on a weekend when the likes of Newcastle and Brighton also posted wins, has tempered those expectations. Moyes opted to bring on both Barry and Beto for the second half, along with Merlin Rohl. If there were any positives to take from a third defeat in five matches, it was in seeing both strikers on the scoresheet in the same game. Everton's scoring problems have been obvious this season, with only Wolves (14), Nottingham Forest (19), Burnley (20), West Ham and Sunderland (both 21) managing fewer Premier League goals than their 22. They did manage to have five shots on target against the Bees, who had six, but an imperious Kelleher stood in their way for much of the game. "We were disappointing defensively and not as strong as we have been, " Moyes told BBC Match of the Day. "We are short on a lot of our creative players which showed at times. [But] we didn't do our defensive duties as well as we could have done. "When your centre-forwards score goals, that's what we want. Today they didn't have the support and back-up. If we'd kept a clean sheet we could have won. " Everton will have to step up if they are to bounce back against Wolves next, with the bottom side fresh off their first win of the season against West Ham on Saturday. Everton will be up against Wolves at Hill Dickinson Stadium in their next Premier League fixture on Wednesday, 7 January (19: 30 GMT) before an FA Cup third-round tie against Sunderland on Saturday, 10 January (12: 15). Meanwhile, Brentford will welcome Sunderland to Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday, 7 January (19: 30 GMT) followed by a trip to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Saturday, 10 January (15: 00).
