Pickford moved to Merseyside in the summer of 2017 and has gone on to make 322 appearances since he arrived from Sunderland for £30million – that was a club record fee at the time but his consistency, quality and durability has made it one of Everton’s finest deals in the modern era. He last signed a new terms in February 2023 – that deal runs to June 2027 – but Everton are determined to head off any issues by putting together a package that will reflect the importance of the 31-year-old and his standing within the squad. Some would wonder why Everton would be prepared to make such a significant financial commitment to Pickford but there is recognition within the club that the cost of trying to find a goalkeeper of comparable ability on the open market would be exorbitant. Such is Pickford’s standing within David Moyes’s squad, he is part of a three-man leadership team that also includes club captain Seamus Coleman and James Tarkowski and has started the new campaign in excellent form. The move to secure Pickford is reflective of Everton’s determination to make progress under the new ownership of The Friedkin Group and would be consistent in keeping with how the transfer window played out for them. Everton are ready to begin contract talks with Jordan Pickford - and want him until retirement David Moyes has Everton fifth in the Premier League after two wins and a loss this season Everton’s first major move was to secure Jarrad Branthwaite – who is recovering from hamstring damage – on a new five-year deal and they then ended up making a raft of additions to bolster their squad, having only had 12 contracted players at one stage earlier in the summer. The window concluded with Everton signing SC Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl on loan but that deal figures an obligation to buy next summer; Rohl had a number of options around Europe but Everton’s interest went back to the January window and he wanted to sign for Moyes. Jack Grealish was the standout acquisition of the summer, along with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but Everton will not rest on the back of this recruitment drive and plans are already in place to strengthen further in future windows. Three of the current squad have deals that are due to run out next summer – Tarkowski, James Garner and Vitalii Mykolenko – but plans are in place to approach the trio about renewing terms, as they have all proven to be important cogs. It was explained earlier in the summer, when Everton were looking for recruits, that their contracts would be addressed in due course and Tarkowski, Mykolenko and Garner have all gone about their business with the minimum of fuss, knowing the club will stick to their word.
