Hibernian confirmed former defender Darren Mc Gregor won't be able to play in his testimonial following a car crash. In a club statement, the Scottish side revealed Mc Gregor was involved in an accident on June 20 and is now recovering at an Edinburgh hospital. Although Mc Gregor sadly won't be able to play an on-field role in his testimonial against Bolton Wanderers on July 19, he will still be in attendance for his special day. Hibernian confirmed the 38-year-old will make his way around the stadium and into the various hospitality suites around Easter Road to speak with supporters before the game, at half-time and at a full-time. The match against Bolton was scheduled to celebrate Mc Gregor's ten years of service to Hibernian as a player and as a coach. Mc Gregor joined Hibs as a free agent in August 2015 after he was released by Scottish giants Rangers. At the time of Mc Gregor's arrival, Hibernian were in the second tier of Scottish football. But in his first season at the club, Mc Gregor helped the Edinburgh outfit win the Scottish Cup as they beat Rangers 3-2 in the final. It was Hibernian's first Scottish Cup triumph in a staggering 114 years and it remains the club's most recent major honour. Mc Gregor was also pivotal in helping Hibernian return to the top flight in his second season at Easter Road as they won the Scottish Championship. The Scot went on to enjoy a total of seven seasons as a player with his boyhood club and amassed a total of 188 appearances across all competitions. Mc Gregor called time on his career at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. However, Mc Gregor was not lost to the club as he immediately transitioned into a coaching role where he became the head coach of Hibernian's Under-18 side. Prior to his move to Hibernian, Mc Gregor enjoyed spells at Cowdenbeath, Arniston Rangers, St Mirren and Rangers across a ten-year period. Confirmation of Mc Gregor's testimonial year was announced last September along with a touching tribute from the club. "A modern-day hero, Darren is a local lad who lived the dream, it's hard to do his fairytale football story justice, " the statement read. "A relative latecomer to the professional game, Darren was handed his big break by former Hibee Danny Lennon at Cowdenbeath, who was so impressed by the powerful, wholehearted centre-back that he took him with him to St Mirren. "Perseverance is stamped all over Darren's DNA and it will have surprised no-one that knows him that he was able to fight his way back from two cruciate ligament injuries.
