UEFA Champions League All competitions This will be the first ever European meeting between Girona and Feyenoord, with the Red and Whites being the Dutch side’s ninth different Spanish opponent in Europe. Feyenoord have lost each of their last three European away games against Spanish sides, conceding 2+ goals each time. Girona’s first UEFA Champions League match ended in a 1-0 defeat to Paris SG via a 90th minute own goal by goalkeeper Paolo Gazzaniga. They were the third team to lose their debut match in the competition 1-0 via a last minute goal, after Lille in 2001 and Union Berlin in 2023. Feyenoord have lost each of their last eight UEFA Champions League away games (including all three last season), since a 1-0 win at Newcastle in September 2002. Girona managed just three shots in their 1-0 defeat at Paris SG on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League, the joint fewest by a team in their debut match on record since 2003-04, along with FC Nordsjælland in 2012 against Shakhtar Donetsk and Royal Antwerp in 2023 against Barcelona. Feyenoord have lost 13 of their last 16 games in the UEFA Champions League (W3), and only managed to keep one clean sheet across this run of matches (2-0 v Celtic in September 2023). Girona’s total of 36 tackles in their game against Paris SG was a total achieved by just one team across the previous two UEFA Champions League campaigns – Borussia Dortmund in December 2023, also 36 against Paris SG. Only Manchester City (165) made more high-intensity pressures in the final third than Feyenoord (154) on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League, with striker Santiago Giménez making 33 of those. The only player to make more in the final third across the opening matchday was Liverpool’s Diogo Jota v Milan (35). Girona’s Arnau Martínez made seven tackles in their 1-0 defeat to Paris SG – it was the most by a Spaniard on their UEFA Champions League debut since Carlos Soler in September 2018 (8, for Valencia vs Juventus). Despite scoring a late own goal in defeat to Paris SG, Girona’s Paulo Gazzaniga prevented the most goals of any goalkeeper on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League, based on the x G of opposition shots on target faced (+2. 1 – 0 conceded from 2. 1 x G on target). © 2024 BBC.
