Hibs v Hearts commentary BBC Radio Scotland This video can not be played Hibs v Hearts commentary BBC Radio Scotland FT: Hibernian 3-2 Hearts Hibernian boss David Gray tells BBC Scotland: "It was a brilliant game to be involved in. We deserved to be 3-0 up. Full credit to Hearts. We certainly were [holding on], and that's when you need your big characters to stand up and be counted. We got over the line and that's the most important thing. "[The big thing today was] making sure the players are aware of the chaos and what's coming, that's something we handled really well, the aggression right from the start, intensity to get the ball back was certainly there. "Big save from the goalkeeper [at the end] and the fine margins have gone for us in the end. "I asked them for a big statement win, we got that today. It's now about kicking on and trying to be more consistent with our results. We got what we deserved today. "They are a really good group, they work hard all the time. The dressing room is a very good dressing room. There's a long way to go, a lot of football to be played. "I'm sure the neutrals enjoyed it. I'm off for a lie down. No real basis to judge Nancy’s Celtic on. Steve For every goal Nygren scores, he misses seven or eight good chances. He isn't the answer after Maeda departs Peabo Gotta say it's farcical that that’s a penalty. Maeda clearly pushes Finlayson first, then he’s off balance yet referee doesn’t see that but deems enough for a penalty. We have no faith in the Scottish VAR system. How can we as observers, ex footballers and pundits call it yet our men in charge somehow don’t? Ridiculous! Referees/VAR need to be microphoned up so we as fans know what’s going on and why. Steven A lot of effort, but no real quality so far for either side. A little look at the x G tells you there's been chances, but no sitters. St Mirren have 0. 43 compared to Kilmarnock's 0. 53 and that comes from nine shots to seven. Greg Kiltie has caught the eye for the visitors, while Roland Idowu could make a case as St Mirren's best player. Just the six goals for that first half then? What a blistering 45 minutes at Almondvale after which Celtic find themselves ahead, but they certainly made hard work of it. A double from Cristiano Montano, a double from Benjamin Nygren, a goal from Hyun-jun Yang as well as a penalty from Arne Engels. Will these two keep up the tempo in the second half? Yan Dhanda (pen) Finn Yeats is penalised for handball and Yan Dhanda tucks away the spot-kick. It's goalless at Ibrox, but it easily could be about 3-3. Lukas Fadinger and Callum Hendry went close for Motherwell early on as the visitors started brightly, but at the other end Calum Ward pulled off a great double save to keep out Connor Barron and then Djeidi Gassama. Thelo Aasgaard also went close for the hosts, while Eli Just was denied by Rangers keeper Jack Butland. No goals, but plenty drama. More please. Dundee 0-0 Falkirk Dundee are looking for a penalty for a handball inside the area. The ref is at the monitor for the second time. Livingston 2-4 Celtic Livingston are still in this. .. Viljami Sinisalo flaps one away before Tony Ralston gets his body in front of Tete Yengi at the back post. Cristiano Montano's shot is then deflected off the foot of Auston Trusty before Sinisalo wins a foul and Celtic get a chance to get their breath back. Rangers 0-0 Motherwell A wee flurry from both teams as the game edges towards half-time. Elijah Just is denied by Jack Butland at one end, with Motherwell screaming for a handball moments later. The game then switches to the other end, with Djeidi Gassama's effort repelled by Calum Ward. Rangers 0-0 Motherwell Chermiti couldn't strike a match, we would be better with an empty matchbox than having him on the pitch. Alexander Dundee 0-0 Falkirk Amy Canavan BBC Sport Scotland at Dens Park Dundee goalkeeper Jon Mc Cracken is having an absolute mare. And the home fans are growing increasingly frustrated. Kicking balls against opposition forwards, rushing out his goal like a headless chicken and grasping at thin air. Someone must've had a good Christmas. .. Arne Engels (pen) Engels hesitates before smashing the ball into the bottom left corner, sending Jerome Prior the wrong way. Livingston 2-3 Celtic From a corner, the ball pings off the arm of Daniel Finlayson. The ref goes for a look and decides there's enough for a pen. There's been a few like that this season, some given, some not. St Mirren 0-0 Kilmarnock Roland Idowu flashes a long-range effort just wide. There have been a few shots for St Mirren, but that was about the closest they've come. Moments later, Idowu goes down in the box. He thinks Killie midfielder David Watson has handled the ball as he slid in and put it behind for a corner. Dundee 0-0 Falkirk Amy Canavan BBC Sport Scotland at Dens Park The referee couldn't have been any quicker in flashing out the red card for Brad Spencer, but the Falkirk skipper was not so speedy leaving the pitch. Adamant it wasn't a red, he lingered while the lengthy VAR check played out. A wise move, it turned out. It's far from a fab view at Dens, but it didn't look like a red from here. .. Livingston 2-3 Celtic Allan Preston Former Livingston wing-back on BBC Sportsound What a hit. I tell you want, the Celtic board have been criticised for some of their signings. You can't say that about Benjamin Nygren. It was a brilliant finish. That's two players on a hat-trick before half time. Jamie Mc Grath's early opener sent Hibernian on their way to a memorable derby win at a bouncing Easter Road Hibernian survived a late fightback from Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts to dent their rivals' title hopes in an epic five-goal Edinburgh derby. With the hosts cruising at 3-0 up at Easter Road, late goals from Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin set up an incredible finale in Leith. But a stunning save from goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger to deny Shankland, and another to thwart Beni Baningime, prevented a remarkable turnaround and inflicted just a second league defeat on Derek Mc Innes' men. The results means Celtic, who have two games in hand, can narrow the gap on Hearts to three points with a win at bottom side Livingston later on Saturday (15: 00 GMT). Hibs news, views & analysis Keep up to date with Hearts By the time the full-time whistle was blown, it felt long ago that the outstanding Jamie Mc Grath had somehow managed to raise the noise level when he cushioned in an early opener from Nicky Cadden's cross from the left. A first-half injury for Cadden then meant Mc Grath had to shift from midfield to left-wing back, and it was from that side the Hibs man provided the cross for substitute Josh Campbell to glance in an excellent 45th-minute header to the far post. Hearts did not manage a shot on target in the first period but passed up a glaring chance to level when Shankland directed a header just wide of the far post. Losing a second goal so close to the break was a damaging blow for Mc Innes' rattled side, who were three down minutes after the interval when Stuart Findlay's poor clearance allowed Kieron Bowie to drive forward and thump in a third. The Gorgie visitors caused serious nerves among the home support, though, turning the screw in the final stages as Shankland headed in a wicked ball from Alexandros Kyziridis, who had two earlier efforts saved. Sallinger then parried another Kyziridis strike straight into the path of Devlin to finish on the rebound, but Hibs managed to hold on to their advantage in a wild conclusion. David Gray's men stay fifth but move to within two points of third-placed Motherwell. This derby will not be forgotten any time soon, but what will its lasting impact be on this campaign? Hibs have had a stop-start season, and who knows what shipping a three-goal lead in this fixture would have done for this team. The target for Gray and his players now must be consistency, with just two points separating third and fifth. Hearts were well below their level, but the level of concern that was there for Mc Innes when his side were three down was significantly reduced by the time they were listening to 'Sunshine on Leith'. The return of Craig Halkett, playing alongside Stuart Findlay, meant the leaders had their first-choice centre-back pairing restored for the trip to Leith, but the duo were rocking for spells of a frantic encounter. The pressure will only ramp up as the months go on, and there is a realistic chance Hearts are second by the time they play again. But the character they demonstrated in their late rally evidences this title challenge is sustainable, with a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon. " Hearts head coach Derek Mc Innes: "If you don't do the basics well, it doesn't matter how good you are or how good a run you're on, you're going to end up with a sore one. "We nearly get the draw at the end, the keeper's pulled off a brilliant save, but you can't just play for half an hour and lose three goals and expect to get something from the game. "It's a sore one for us, but we've got to own that. " Hearts have a week off before they face Livingston at Tynecastle on 3 January (15: 00 GMT). After their 1-0 win in October, Heart of Midlothian are looking to win back-to-back Scottish Premiership matches against Hibernian for the first time since April 2014. Indeed, Derek Mc Innes could be the first Hearts boss to win both of his first two top-flight Edinburgh derbies in charge of the club since Paulo Sérgio in 2011-12 (first 3). Excluding when they were relegated in 2020, Hearts haven’t lost their final Scottish Premiership game of a calendar year since 2016 (0-1 v Aberdeen), going unbeaten in seven since (W3 D4), a run which includes a 1-0 win away to Hibernian in 2018. Hibernian have only lost two of their last 20 home matches in the Scottish Premiership (W12 D6), with those two defeats both being by a single goal, against Rangers (0-1 in October) and Celtic (1-2 in November). Since Hibernian were promoted in 2017, Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland is the top scoring player in Scottish Premiership Edinburgh derbies between the two sides with five goals. However, Shankland hasn’t scored in any of the last four league contests between Hibs and Hearts, last netting in this fixture in February 2024. Copyright © 2025 BBC.
