Manchester City will kickstart their Club World Cup campaign with a favourable clash against Moroccan minnows Wydad AC this evening. Pep Guardiola's side are among the favourites for glory at the competition, having already invested heavily in the transfer market. The Citizens paid out £180million on new players in January, nearly as much as the other 19 Premier League teams combined (£190m). However, having failed to see that translate into silverware, the club splurged another £116m this month to fund their Club World Cup bid. Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli all signed in time to feature in the tournament. City, who won the Club World Cup in 2023 under the original format, can justify their spending with a $1billion prize purse up for grabs. The FA Cup runners-up are also in a favourable group with Juventus, Al Ain and Wydad AC, with the latter team first up. This Group G match will take place on Wednesday, June 18, with kick-off set for 5pm UK time. Channel 5 will show 23 of the 63 matches from the Club World Cup on free-to-air terrestrial TV in the UK, and this will be one of them. Coverage of Man City v Wydad AC will begin an hour before kick-off at 4pm, before Real Madrid vs Al Hilal will follow afterwards.
