Ivanovic (R) is now Millwall's joint top scorer with eight goals this season Late goals by Mihailo Ivanovic and Josh Coburn edged Millwall past play-off rivals Hull to climb within a point of the Championship's top two. The Lions were second best for long spells in the game but showed their tenacity to stay level at 1-1 before substitute Ivanovic tapped home Femi Azeez's cross and Coburn wrapped up victory with their third. Defender Jake Cooper had volleyed in Tristan Crama's knockdown to open the scoring before Joe Gelhardt levelled for the Tigers. But Hull paid the price for failing to convert their dominance into goals, with both Kyle Joseph and Charlie Hughes hitting the bar in the first half. With Millwall forced into a late reshuffle after Casper de Norre was injured in the warm-up, it was the home side who took control early on, as Oli Mc Burnie and Joseph both went close. Joseph's close-range header from John Lundstram's cross crashed against the bar but the Lions responded by snatching the lead with their first opportunity as Crama headed back Azeez's free-kick for Cooper to hook in. Hull struck back almost immediately when Gelhardt scampered through, collecting a return ball from Joseph before slamming beyond Anthony Patterson for his 12th goal of the season. The Tigers continued to carve out openings and Gelhardt's deflected drive looped up for Joseph to head home – only for the goal to be chalked off for a foul on the goalkeeper by Mc Burnie. The woodwork came to Millwall's rescue once more before the break, with Hughes' powerful header from a free-kick rattling the bar and bouncing down but failing to cross the line. Although the visitors strengthened their midfield at half-time, introducing Luke Cundle and Alfie Doughty, they were under pressure again when Mc Burnie's glancing header flew just wide and Regan Slater's volley was charged down. However, the Lions held firm and regained the advantage when Azeez danced around his marker and slid an inch-perfect low ball into the box for Ivanovic – sent on after Doughty hobbled off 10 minutes earlier – to walk over the line. Semi Ajayi's stray pass then presented Coburn with the opportunity to make it 3-1, taking the ball past Hughes and tucking it low beyond Ivor Pandur to seal his side's fifth win in six games. Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside: "This was the best home performance since I've been here because we played a very good game, we created a lot of chances and missed a lot of chances. "It's always a frustrating defeat when you know you play good but sometimes I'm not happy with our performance and we take one or three points. "If you didn't watch the game, you'd think Millwall kill you [us] but we were very good and I hope we will continue like this because there are a lot of games in front of us and you never know. "We made two mistakes (in the second half), we dropped too much, didn't attack the ball but this is football, there is always something happening that you didn't expect and we have to take the lessons from this. " This video can not be played Jakirovic: 'We made two mistakes' Millwall head coach Alex Neil: "What we did do is defend our box well. We always dig in and we always do the basics pretty well, and that gives you a chance. The points are important, but the performances are also important. "They were a bit brighter and moved the ball better but what counts is what happens in boxes, we defended really well and were ruthless in their box. "As far as duels went, too many times we weren't good enough. But you need to win games in a variety of different ways as I don't think everyone plays well every week. "I don't pay attention to the table – we've got a hell of a lot of work to do to get where we want to – but us winning just gives us a bit of a buffer.
