Manchester United will hope history doesn't repeat itself after the last time the club signed a Wolves star to combat relegation form. Ruben Amorim oversaw the Red Devils' worst league campaign since 1973-1974 - the season that they were relegated from the top flight. The Old Trafford outfit lost 18 Premier League games in the season just finished, to finish level on 42 points with Wolves. Amorim's first deal to try and correct United's worst campaign in 51 years has been to complete a transfer not done since that term. United recently unveiled Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62. 5million move after triggering his release clause. The Brazilian has become the first senior player in over five decades to make the switch from Molineux to Old Trafford. Darren Ferguson and Denis Irwin have both moved in the opposite direction, but the Red Devils rarely poach Wolves' top talent. Jim Mc Calliog was the last to be recruited for the first team from the Black Country side on transfer-deadline day in March 1974. Then-United boss Tommy Docherty swooped to beat Aston Villa to a £60, 000 deal for the Scot in a last-ditch bid to stave off relegation. "Tommy Docherty gave me my first chance as a professional with Chelsea, " said Mc Calliog, as reported by the club's website. "I will not regret it, even if Manchester United go down, they are a great club. " Those words indeed came to pass, as Mc Calliog scored four goals in a three-game spell but was unable to help United avoid the drop. The midfielder made 20 Division Two appearances before being sold to Southampton in a decision that would haunt the English giants. A year later, it was Mc Calliog's pass that set up Bobby Stokes to score the only goal in the Saints' 1976 FA Cup win over Docherty's United. Now retired, the 10-cap Scotland international is involved in a different clean sheet business as the owner of a bed and breakfast. Mc Calliog, now 78, has even featured his Ayshire B&B alongside his wife Debbie on Channel 4's long-serving show, Four in a Bed. He said: “After retiring from the game in 1991, I went into the pub and restaurant trade. “I didn’t deliberately have plans to move back to Scotland, but we love it where we are, and it’s a pleasure to have people stay. ” Mc Calliog, who famously bagged Scotland's winner in a 3-2 victory over England in 1967, won again for his Langside Bed and Breakfast. However, it was his appearance on the free-to-air reality TV show that made him more renowned for tartan bedsheets over Tartan Army. His wife Debbie added: "We were invited to a Scotland against England game and when we arrived, Sir Rod Stewart was in the room. "Jim went over to speak to him and Sir Rod said: ‘You’re the couple who have the B&B’. " The couple have been running the Langside since 2006, with prices starting at around £120-per-night, which includes breakfast. Mc Calliog has also opted for a canine theme with a giant dog statue outside the front door, in addition to pooch-printed wallpaper.
