Lamine Yamal has channelled one of El Clasico’s great celebrations during one of its greatest ever fixtures. The 17-year-old Barcelona sensation scored the equaliser against Real Madrid in a 4-3 match for the ages at Montjuic, with the hosts 2-0 down to a Kylian Mbappe double after 15 minutes. Eric Garcia pulled one back in the 19th and then Lamine reset the balance in the 32nd and told supporters to calm down. Jogging over to the corner flag, he whipped out a celebration that became iconic when Cristiano Ronaldo first did it for Real in 2012 in the same fixture. And much like Ronaldo on that occasion, he was proved to be right, with Raphinha scoring two more before the break for an astonishing 4-2 half-time lead. Mbappe then completed his hat-trick with the only goal of the second half, but both teams had the ball in the net multiple times before VAR intervention. When Ronaldo produced the original celebration, Madrid were returning to Camp Nou after their 5-0 hammering the season before and saw a late Alexis Sanchez equaliser to make the game 1-1. Ronaldo then scored to make it 2-1, settling the match and pulling out on of a number of iconic celebrations. Jose Mourinho's Madrid beat Pep Guardiola's Barca to the La Liga title that season, and it looks like Lamine will similarly be on the winning team this time around. Barca are now seven clear at the top of the table with three to play, but things could have been very different. Both sides had chances to add many more goals in the second period, but Mbappe kept finding himself offside before one great chance was denied by Wojciech Szczesny. Youngster Victor Munoz made his debut in the 88th minute and failed to find the net with a glorious chance and it looked like that would be it. However, a later Aurelien Tchouameni header then went in from a corner, but Mbappe was again caused for an infringement as he tried to tap the ball in at the far post from an offside position. Barcelona's players collapsed to the floor at full-time realising how big the win was, while Catalunya Radio report that Wojciech Szczesny was brought to tears. Hansi Flick celebrated wildly too, as it was the perfect response to their midweek disappointment. Having already won the Copa del Rey, also against Madrid, Barca were on for an historic treble. Yet they came out on the wrong end of one of the Champions League's greatest ever ties - a 13-goal contest with Inter Milan. After a 3-3 first leg Inter won the second 4-3 in extra time at San Siro. But any thoughts that Madrid would be facing a wounded animal were swept aside by half-time. Defeat was also be the ultimate humiliation for the departing Carlo Ancelotti. Despite UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup wins in the season, they're now almost certain to end the season without one of the three major trophies. Defeat was also their fourth to Barca in a single season, a new record. Speaking after another stellar performance, Lamine Yamal was asked if it makes up for the Champions League semi-final exit. "In the end, I told my mother, the Champions League comes every year, " he said. "We'll keep trying, but today was important to win to get closer to the league title. " © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
