Ella Toone has revealed her grandmother sadly passed away on the morning of England’s victory in the Euro 2025 final. The forward played the opening 87 minutes in Basel as the Lionesses claimed back-to-back European titles by beating Spain on penalties, after the contest had ended 1-1 after extra-time. And Toone has now shared on social media that she had to put personal tragedy aside before taking to the pitch. In an emotional Instagram post, the Manchester United star paid tribute to her ‘Nana Maz’, four days after lifting her second European trophy. She wrote: “Even in the highest of highs life can hit you with the lowest of lows. “My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. I have comfort in knowing she got to watch from the best seat in the house with Dad, her favourite person. “I’ll miss you forever nan but I’ll cherish the special memories we made, there isn’t enough words I can possibly say to sum up the person you were, but I’m grateful you were my nanna. “My football loving, crazy, funny Nan. “All those years ago when you put a bet on at the bookies that I would play for England one day and on the day you leave us we bring it home again. “You always knew it. Say hello to our angels up there, grandads been waiting for you for a while. Love you always, our ‘famous’ Nanna Maz x. ” Toone received a number of supportive comments after revealing the sad news. Her England teammate Lauren Hemp commented: “Sending love Tooney, ” alongside a heart emoji. Keira Walsh wrote: “Thinking of you and your family, ” while Beth Mead commented several heart emojis. Olympic runner Keely Hodgkinson added: “Sending love to you Ella and the fam. ” Toone started five games for the Lionesses on their road to Euro 2025 glory this month. She was visibly emotional at full time after their final victory on Sunday, breaking down in tears on the pitch as she was embraced by her teammates. The 25-year-old also experienced personal tragedy last year, losing her dad, Nick, to prostate cancer in September last year. Toone paid a heartfelt tribute to him after the final on Sunday with Beth Mead, who lost her mum to ovarian cancer in January 2023. Both players sent a kiss to the sky while celebrating their back-to-back European Championship success. Toone also shared an image of an empty seat next to her family at St. Jakob-Park and said: “Spare seat next to my mum tonight. If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is. “I know you were there dad, Love you. ” Toone’s late father received his diagnosis the day after the Lionesses won their first Euro title in 2022. England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton also revealed that her grandfather passed away just two days before the start of this summer’s European championship. She paid tribute to him by having the word ‘Grandpa’ written into the inside of her shirt.
