But, already on a booking for a foul early in the second half, Ekitike took off his shirt in celebration and was shown red, leaving Liverpool to see out the final four minutes plus stoppage time with 10 men - and he is now suspended for Saturday's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace. Manager Arne Slot had made 11 changes to the side that beat Everton on Saturday and this was a far-from-perfect performance from his young team. But Liverpool, 10-time League Cup winners, have reached the final in three of the past four seasons and it is that squad depth that they will need to lean on to do the same again. The forward will have perhaps watched with slight concern as Ekitike once again stepped up to score the winner, but his sending-off means Isak will surely get another opportunity to impress at Selhurst Park on Saturday. Chances at Anfield are few and far between and Southampton should have taken theirs when Adam Armstrong's powerful strike clattered off the bar before Leo Scienza headed the rebound wide - 38 seconds before Isak opened the scoring at the other end.
