Liverpool are progressing with talks over a new contract for one of their key players, as he attracts interest from Real Madrid. The Reds already know they are to lose two key figures in the dressing room this summer, with both Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson set to depart at the end of the season. That puts Liverpool immediately on the back foot, needing two replacements, and so they are therefore unlikely to want to lose many other key members of the squad. The Merseysiders have already experienced the rough side of Los Blancos’ advances in recent times, with Trent Alexander-Arnold departing near the end of his contract to sign for the Spanish giants. Now they’re sniffing around Anfield again, but Arne Slot’s side have other plans.
It has been reported by TEAMtalk that Liverpool have made progress in talks over a new contract for Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungary international has reportedly been fielding interest from Madrid, but this new deal will see him bank a significant pay rise, and with that, increased seniority in the squad. The best features, fun and footballing quizzes, straight to your inbox every week. That makes sense, given Slot has already spoken about the 25-year-old as a potential future captain at Anfield. The new deal, the same report states, is expected to put him amongst the highest earners at Liverpool. His current deal runs until 2028, but the club were keen to avoid the star becoming unsettled with interest from the likes of Los Blancos, something this new contract should help with.
In Four Four Two’s opinion, this is smart business from Liverpool, and perhaps a lesson learned from the past. Last season, all of Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk were allowed to get down to the last months of their deals, presenting a headache in terms of negotiations and plenty of uncertainty at the time. They clearly want to avoid the same happening this time around, and so have moved quickly to avoid any thoughts of a Szoboszlai departure. Szoboszlai is valued at €100m, according to Transfermarkt.
