By ADRIAN BISHOP and CRAIG HOPE AT SEOUL WORLD CUP STADIUM Updated: 23: 59 AEST, 3 August 2025 32 View comments Recap Mail Sport's live blog for the latest score, team news and updates as Newcastle took on Tottenham at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in a pre-season friendly. Thanks for reading our coverage of today's clash between Newcastle and Tottenham from the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Something tells me Mathys Tel won't want to watch this again anytime soon. Rarely will a player get such a golden opportunity to put the ball in the back of the net. The former Bayern Munich star was lively in spurts during the first half but this shocking miss will be serve as his endearing impact on the game. Click below to read more: If Eddie Howe wasn't already aware of Newcastle's need for a striker, today's game will have served as yet more evidence of just how vital a natural No 9 can be. Newcastle made a number of chances throughout the game but were often just unable to direct them goalward. Watch this space as the race to sign Benjamin Sesko looks set to heat up in the coming days and weeks. Who's cutting onions? It ends all level here at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea. Son Heung-min was not able to find a final goal in his final game for Spurs but the reception the 33-year-old received as he made his way off the pitch is testament to the legacy he has created in north London. Spare a though though for James Maddison. Finally back on the pitch after a lengthy spell out of the game and again he is forced off injured. In terms of the actual football on the pitch both sides showed potential but it's fair to say that the action took a backseat in the second half. Still, fans of both teams can come away with things to be excited about with the return of the Premier League now just days away. It's our first update regarding the actual action unfolding on the pitch for some time. Spurs break at pace and Yang has a golden opportunity to send the 64, 00 fans in attedance into pandemonium but a moment of hesitation from South Korean allows Newcastle to get back. This is not what Tottenham would have wanted. James Maddison was introduced just minutes ago as a substitute and is now on the ground in considerable pain. A replay shows that there was no contact involved but Maddison appeared immediately aware of the severity of his injury. After coming off a campaign so disrupted by injury here's hoping this is just a minor setback for the England international. Maddison is carried off the pitch on a stretcher as he concerned team-mates watch on. The midfielder is replaced by home favourite Yang Min-hyeok. A lone trumpeteer plays a rendition of When the Spurs Go Marching In as the capacity crowd sing along in unison. Might be one for the Premier League this. .. More changes for Spurs as James Maddiosn and Wilson Odobert are brought on. Meanwhile, Newcastle's new arrival Park Seung-Soo gets a huge ovation from a stadium packed full of his countrymen as he is introduced in the closing stages. No pressure, kid. As we pause for our second and final cooling break of this afternoon's game its a good time to reflect on Son Heung-min's ten years in north London. The club captain is overcome with emotion on the bench and who could blame him? 454 games, 173 goals and a Europa League trophy. Not bad going. The substitutes' board is up again and this time it Son's No 7 as he makes way for a final time. Players from both teams give the 33-year-old a guard of honour as he brings an end to 10 years at Tottenham with a tear in his eye. Football is rarely a place for sentimentality but you have to say that was a perfect sendoff and a fitting tribute to one of the sport's most popular figures. From the old to the new, the club's summer signing Mohammed Kudus is on to replace him following an impressive display against Arsenal in midweek. After an impressive display deputising as a No 9, Antony Gordon makes way for William Osula. Tino Livramento comes on to replace Matt Targett. Meanwhile Spurs also opt to make some changes with Pape Matar Sarr and Mathys Tel being replaced by Richarlison and Yves Bissouma. Perhaps someone should tell these players that this is just a friendly. .. Archie Gray hits the deck after being struck with a stray elbow but the 19-year-old is able to carry on. The tackles are really flying in now and the flow of the game is suffering for it. Mere seconds after losing their captain to injury, Gordon has the ball in the back of the net but the flag is up for offside. Newcastle really seem to have come out with a point to prove in this second half. Look away now Newcastle fans. Bruno Guimaraes slips off the ball and goes down in considerable discomfort before hobbling off the pitch. Eddie Howe's face is a picture. .. The first chance of the second half falls to Newcastle and again Anthony Gordon is in the right place at the right time. A cross from Harvey Barnes ricochets into the England international's path but he is unable to keep his effort on target. Still, it's been a very impressive display from Gordon thus far in the absence of a recognised striker. We're back underway for the second-half for today's friendly between Newcastle and Tottenham. Thomas Frank has made three changes during the interval, with Djed Spence, Mickey Van de Ven and Lucas Bergvall also introduced for Spurs. Son remains on the pitch. I repeat: Son remains on the pitch. It's all level at the break here at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Spurs capitalised on Newcastle's slow start during the early going and really could have built up a sizeable lead if they were more clinical in the final third. Seemingly having woken up sometime after the drinks break the Magpies are now showing glimpses of their best. The rapid counter attack leading up to Harvey Barnes' equaliser as perfect evidence. The real question remains, however: Have we seen the last of Son Heung-min in a Spurs shirt? The man of the hour had several opportunities during the first half but wasn't able to secure a fairtyale ending in front of the adoring crowd. It remains to be seen whether he will stay on for the second half, or if Thomas Frank will use the opportunity to expirement with the players that he will have for the coming campaign. They might really spoil the party now. Harvey Barnes has another opportunity for Newcastle but this time Spurs are able to make a vital block. Then, we're treated to some South American handbags between Cristian Romero and Bruno Guimaraes as if to demonstrate that this is a friendy in name only for some players. By Craig Hope At Seoul World Cup Stadium Now Harvey Barnes, ooooh it's an equaliser! Newcastle break quickly on the counter and Anthony Gordon is again at the heart of the creative process as he feeds the bal to Barnes. Barnes unleashes a strike that beats Kinsky at his near post and puts Eddie Howe's side back level in Seoul. By Craig Hope At Seoul World Cup Stadium Kieran Trippier is booked for bringing down Son on the edge of the area. You have to imagine Son will fancy himself take the ensuing free kick. Ever the good team-mate, Son instead hands the ball over to Pedro Porro whose dipping effort requires a strong hand from Pope to sail safely over the bar. By Craig Hope At Seoul World Cup Stadium Another fabulous ball from Guimaraes finds its way into the Spurs box but Joelinton is unable to keep his effort on target. Eddie Howe's men started slowly here but it seems they're just starting to shift into a higher gear. It's still pretty end-to-end stuff here though as we pause for the first of two cooling down breaks this afternoon. By Craig Hope At Seoul World Cup Stadium Anthony Gordon is looking dangerous as a central striker, not that Eddie Howe will want to use him there come the season's start. It is not Gordon's fault, but Newcastle desperately need a new signing at No. 9. How has he missed? ! Mathys Tel is through on goal with no defender seemingly for miles around as the flag stays down. The Frenchman attempts to slip a strike beyond Nick Pope but his effort is easily dealt with. Newcastle are starting to get on the front foot here. A good cross from Kieran Trippier looks for Harvey Barnes but the former Leicester man can't quite make contact with his header. Seconds later the Magpies are in again as Anthony Gordon skips past two defenders before his ensuing cross veered wide. Newcastle have started to settle down defensively but Spurs are still well in control here. A searching through ball finds an onrushing Son on the wing but the linesman's flag is up as the entire stadium sighs collectively in disappointment. By Craig Hope At Seoul World Cup Stadium One observation of crowds here, they are very respectful watchers. The stadiums are awfully quiet, until a moment of excitement, when a collective shriek sounds like a siren going off! Spurs' press is absolutely suffocating Newcastle in the early going here. Their efforts are proving productive too, with Matar Sarr catching Guimaraes on the ball. Son has a chance to make it two but his strike is blocked. Well they certainly haven't wasted any time! Newcastle have looked shaky defensively since kick-off here and Spurs have taken an immediate advantage. Brennan Johnson opens the scoring after his strike from outside the box takes a significant deflection off Dan Burn before finding its way into the net. The Wales international then pays homage to Son by adopting his trademark celebration. Son receives an exceptional welcome as he leads his team onto the pitch for the final time and is warmly greeted as the two team's shake hands. The new Premier League season is now just 13 days and both of these teams will be looking to build up some momentum so expect neither side to give an inch. After a swift tribute to Son the action is underway. .. By Craig Hope At Seoul World Cup Stadium Ready for kick off here and, belatedly, we have a stadium on this Far East tour that does not feel like a greenhouse! It's a shame the temperatures have finally dropped, 24 hours before I fly home. .. Before he leads the club out for one final time let's take a look back at how Son announced his departure yesterday. With a decade in north London under his belt and having finally captured silverware with the club last season it's no surpirse to see the star teary-eyed. Let's hope he can go out with a bang today. We are now just ten minutes away from kick-off at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Players from both teams are completing their pre-match warm-ups as we prepare for what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Stay right here as we'll have all the updates once the action gets underway at 12pm BST. While Son stepping away from Tottenham is bound to make the headlines, another compelling narrative heading into today's clash is Newcastle's ongoing transfer situation. Eddie Howe admitted yesterday that he was not made aware that Alexander Isak would be training at his former club Real Sociedad as he continues to recover from a thigh injury. Should the Magpies lose their most prolific marksman mere weeks before the start of the new season they are going to need to move fast in their to bid to secure a suitable replacement. Luckily for them, they have already begun preparations. The club have joined the race to sign highly-rated RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko. Newcastle face competition from Man United for the 22-year-old's signature but reports from his native Slovenia suggest the North East is his preferred destination. Son Heung-min has long been one of Tottenham's most influential players on the pitch, but his commerical value in north London is certianly nothing to be sniffed at. The 33-year-old has brought with him legions of South Korean supporters who now count themselves as dedicated Spurs supporters. Click below to check out Mail Sport's MATT BARLOW investigation into just how valuable Son has been for the club. South Korea has really embraced football since this stadium served as one of the venues for the 2002 World Cup. And while the majority of supporters in attendance are here for to watch Son wave goodbye to Spurs, there is also a dedicated Magpie contingent in the crowd. Eddie Howe's side welcomed the arrival of teenage winger Park Seung-Soo earlier this summer, so watch for him to make an appearance off the bench in his home country. Thomas Frank has named his starting XI for this afternoon's clash and it's no surprise who will be leading the team out. Son looks set to don the captain's armband for Spurs for one final time as he bows out in front of a capacity stadium full of his adoring countrymen. Not a bad way to call it a day. .. Elsewhere there's a start between the sticks for Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky with Vicario on the bench. Newcastle's team for this afternoon's clash has been released and Eddie Howe's men will line up without a recognised striker in the starting XI. The club's top goalscorer last season, Alexander Isak, is still training away from his Magpies team-mates as he attempts to force a move to Liverpool through. In his absence, England international Anthony Gordon will likely serve as the side's primary attacking outlet. While there were definitely some tears shed at the press conference on Saturday, Son still managed to crack a smile later in the day. The South Korea captain was joined by his countryman and combat sports star Choi Hong-man during a media event yesterday. The colossal 7ft2in former kickboxing champion swiftly lifted Son into his arms and cradled the 33-year-old like a baby. Imagine having him waiting in the box for a corner. .. Son Heung-min could play his last game for Tottenham in his native South Korea on Sunday after informing the club he that he will leave this summer. The 33-year-old will likely bring down the curtain on a decade in North London when he appears against Newcastle at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, in front of a sell-out crowd of 66, 000. Spurs are discussing a deal with MLS club Los Angeles FC, although the value is thought to be less than what they would receive from Saudi Arabia, where clubs had also expressed an interest.
