NCAAW Tory Verdi went 29-66 in just under three years as the Pitt women's basketball coach. Lance King / Getty Images Pitt fired women’s basketball coach Tory Verdi on Tuesday. “After a thorough and thoughtful evaluation of our women’s basketball program, it has been determined that we have not progressed enough competitively and now is the right time to seek a new leader for our program, ” Pitt athletic director Allen Greene said in a release. “We thank Tory for his dedication over the past three seasons and wish him and his family nothing but the best in their future endeavors. The search process for our next leader is already underway. ” Advertisement The coach’s dismissal comes almost a month after six former players filed lawsuits against Verdi and the university, alleging abusive coaching methods by Verdi as well as Title IX violations and a failure by the school to act after incidents of alleged abuse were reported to multiple school officials. At the time, Pitt told The Athletic, “The university is aware of these lawsuits and their allegations, which are without merit and will be vigorously defended. ” Asked Wednesday whether the university conducted (or is still conducting) an internal investigation into the allegations detailed in the lawsuits, a Pitt spokesperson said, “We cannot comment on that due to the pending litigation. ” Verdi’s personal attorney, Matt Racunas, did not respond to a phone call Wednesday morning seeking comment. Racunas previously told The Athletic that he and Verdi were “confident that the truth will prevail. ” Pitt women’s basketball has struggled to find success since joining the ACC in 2013. Under three coaches, including Verdi, the Panthers have made the postseason only once in 13 seasons. Verdi coached the Panthers to a record of 29-66 from 2023 to 2026, including 8-46 in conference play. Pitt, which finished its season Sunday with a 93-43 loss to NC State, did not qualify for the ACC tournament. The Panthers went 8-23 for the season and 1-17 in the ACC. Their lone conference win came against 5-26 Boston College, which fired coach Joanna Bernabei-Mc Namee last weekend. There are now four power-conference jobs open in this cycle. Boston College and Rutgers fired their coaches this past week, and longtime Northwestern coach Joe Mc Keown announced last March that he would retire at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
