James Tavernier came on as a substitute to score Rangers' equaliser Club captain James Tavernier's late penalty rescued a point for 10-man Rangers against Dundee as the Glasgow side were left without a win in their opening two league fixtures for the first time since 1989. The substitute's spot kick denied the visitors their first win at Ibrox in 24 years - but Russell Martin is also left waiting for his first Scottish Premiership victory as Rangers head coach. Ryan Astley's fine second-half header from a well-worked free-kick looked like it would give new Dundee head coach Steven Pressley a marquee result early in his tenure, but Rangers rallied well, with Tavernier converting late on from the spot after Djeidi Gassama was fouled. This after defender Nasser Djiga had been sent off for hauling down Fin Robertson shortly after Dundee took the lead. The home fans vented their fury at various points during the match, unhappy with the pace and intensity of play, even booing substitutions when Nico Raskin and Kieran Dowell were introduced after the break. Dundee looked unrecognisable from the side that lost to Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic in the group stage of the League Cup before going two down inside half an hour at home to Hibs in last week's Premiership opener. Superbly organised at the back and quick on the counter-attack, Dundee coped admirably with anything their hosts threw at them. Rangers' lack of quality contrasted sharply with the effervescence of their Champions League qualifying victory over Viktoria Plzen. It could have been even worse for the home side had Clark Robertson's first-half header found the inside of the Rangers net rather than the inside of the left-hand post. How relieved former England goalkeeper Jack Butland was to see the ball bounce into his grateful gloves in front of the Copland Stand. There was an action replay too, with another Robertson header being tipped on to the same post by Butland a short while later, but this time the impressive Dundee defender was well offside. Rangers did force visiting goalkeeper Jon Mc Cracken into a couple of decent second-half saves and huffed and puffed when they went down to 10 men, showing good intent but not enough good play. If Dundee play like this for the rest of the season, Pressley's assertion that they will be "OK" will be a massive understatement. Rangers will draw some comfort from the fact they rescued a point with 10 men - and it was nearly all three if a VAR check on a Cyriel Dessers effort had not ruled the striker offside. It led to an all-too-familiar soundtrack to a domestic game at Ibrox: boos from the home support. Rangers v Dundee: How it unfolded and post-match reaction Have your say on the action Could Rangers kick-start their domestic campaign after the false start in Motherwell last week? That was the big pre-match question. The answer was a resounding - and, for the Rangers fans, depressing - "no". This could be a landmark result for Dundee. It could be a damaging one for Martin early in his Rangers reign, especially if rivals Celtic win in Aberdeen on Sunday. At half-time, the signs were not promising. It seemed like a case of the same old story in the Premiership, with Rangers struggling to break down a well-organised, disciplined, deep-lying Dundee side. Credit to Pressley and his men: they had a horror start to his tenure. They looked like a decent side for 45 minutes and could easily have been a goal up at the break. Most in white were heroes, but special credit must go to defenders Astley, Robertson and Luke Graham. The first two combined superbly for the Dundee goal and played well all match. Graham was a rock at the back. Full of energy, bravery and commitment, Dundee were totally transformed from the lacklustre early season showings. It is back to Champions League qualifying for Rangers. Martin's men are away to Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday (18: 00 BST), defending a 3-0 lead. For Dundee, it is a long wait for their next match after being knocked out of the Premier Sports Cup. A trip to Rugby Park on Saturday, 23 August (15: 00) against Kilmarnock lies next. Only against five sides have Rangers ever won 20+ consecutive home matches in their history, most recently an ongoing run of 21 against Dunfermline Athletic from 1999 to 2021. Rangers drew 1-1 with Motherwell on MD1, but the Gers haven’t failed to win both of their opening two matches of a Scottish Premiership campaign since 1989-90 under Graeme Souness (lost to St. Mirren and Hibernian). In their opening day defeat to Hibernian last weekend, Dundee managed just two shots, their fewest in a Scottish Premiership home game since October 2018 vs Celtic (2). The Dee did, however, win three of their final five away league games last term (L2), as many as across their 17 matches prior. Joe Rothwell has recorded three assists across his last eight league appearances, with each assist coming from a set piece (2 for Leeds, 1 for Rangers) – the midfielder created the joint-most chances (3) of any Rangers player on MD1 against Motherwell, including his assist via a corner for James Tavernier.
