The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 after a Brennan Johnson touch sent the ball agonisingly beyond Andre Onana late on in the first half, and United couldn't find the important equaliser. As a result, it is Tottenham who end their 17-year wait for a trophy and United who limp back to England with their tails between their legs. 'Just when you think things can't get any worse for Man United. It's been the story all year, ' blasted Keane. 'They've been getting out of jail with European football and it's been covering the huge cracks at Man United. All season they have been so easy to beat. 'They got lucky a few times in Europe and then tonight again, ultimately it's not good enough. They didn't show enough quality. Not enough options off the bench. Roy Keane laid into his former team after their defeat by Tottenham and claimed their European campaign had been covering cracks at the club Brennan Johnson's goal was the difference for Tottenham in Bilbao as they beat Man United 1-0 Man United's historically poor season is set to finish on a negative after his latest setback 'If you're depending on Harry Maguire to get you out of jail you're in trouble. ' The Red Devils were unable to find a response in a game that distinctly lacked in quality, and failed to have a single shot on target until a Luke Shaw header in the dying moments of the encounter. It caps a dramatic if not smooth campaign in Europe, that began in dramatic fashion indeed with three draws from three games, all after taking winning positions in the league phase. The quarter-finals were dramatic in the extreme, with United throwing away a lead in the first leg to draw 2-2 with Lyon in France. The following week at Old Trafford, they nearly spurned a man advantage from 2-0 up to win 7-6 on aggregate, Harry Maguire scoring in the 121st minute to finally seal the win. All this against the backdrop of an entirely miserable domestic campaign, with the club in 16th in the Premier League, and it points to the need for plenty of thinking and no small amount of action over the summer. United were fairly toothless in front of goal on the night, and it was a perfect encapsulation of their season; a fair amount of bark, and almost no bite. It's not as if they were outplayed by Tottenham at San Mames, either. Bruno Fernandes was unable to produce some magic on the night to rescue his side Rasmus Hojlund (pictured) and Joshua Zirkzee scored just seven league goals between them Tottenham won the game despite having just three shots, 27. 7 per cent possession and only made 115 passes on the night. But United had no plan B, C or D and proved to be more nuisance than actual danger for the vast majority of the game. In the final minutes of seven added on they did mount a siege on the Spurs goal, but there was no focal point to aim for in the box when it mattered most. Goals have been the concern all season and Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee only scoring seven between them in the Premier League, with United naturally linked as a result with almost every elite striker under the sun. As a result, the Maguires of the team - a fantastic header of the ball but a central defender by trade - have needed to chip in at the other end of the pitch, and ultimately papered over cracks that potentially run very deep indeed at Old Trafford.
