Finland international Oona Siren joined West Ham in September 2024 At a glance London City take lead through Jana Fernandez goal on the break Oona Siren levels for West Ham with a superb volley form outside the box Hammers four points above Leicester, who occupy WSL relegation spot London City move a up a place to sixth in the table PLAYER RATER Oona Siren's stunning volley helped Women's Super League relegation battlers West Ham fight back to earn a point against London City Lionesses. Jana Fernandez had put London City in front with a goal on the break during a first half in which the Hammers lacked a cutting edge in attack. Finnish midfielder Siren ensured the Hammers salvaged something from the game with an eye-catching first goal for the club, scored from just outside the box. The result leaves West Ham four points above bottom side Leicester City, who face Brighton later on Sunday (15: 00 BST kick-off). West Ham showed some positive early intent but were punished in the 20th minute when they were caught on the counterattack. London City broke from a West Ham corner through Freya Godfrey, who fed Fernandez and the Spaniard guided the ball into the corner of the net despite a last-ditch challenge from Estelle Cascarino. The Hammers failed to register a shot on target in the first half although Riko Ueki and Shekiera Martinez both dragged wide from good positions. Isobel Goodwin should have added a second for London City on the hour when she poked an effort wide from Godfrey's cutback. But an improved display from West Ham after the interval was rewarded when Saki Kumagai's headed clearance from a Viviane Asseyi free-kick was met by a sweet strike from Siren which deceived Elene Lete. West Ham had chances to win it late on when Martinez's deep cross picked out Ueki, but she could only direct her header agonisingly wide and Martinez went close with a long-range effort which flashed just wide of the top-left corner. West Ham had lost all seven of their London derbies in the WSL this season heading into the match - and It looked like being another day of capital punishment when Fernandez slotted in. Visiting goalkeeper Lete did not have a save of note to make during a first half in which the Hammers, who have failed to find the net in their previous three WSL matches, rarely threatened. This was the type of situation where they might have wilted. To their credit, Rita Guarino's side broke the shackles of a slightly cautious approach and were more decisive after half-time against a London City side who had already secured their top-flight status. Martinez was more direct with a willingness to run at London City defence while the introduction of Asseyi provided moments of finesse. And when it arrived, the equalising goal was a spectacular one, although Lete perhaps should have done better. West Ham have failed to win any of their last four games in the WSL but with only three fixtures remaining this could well end up an valuable point. London City boss Eder Maestre, who made four changes to his starting line-up, already appears to have one eye on next season. West Ham are next in WSL action on 26 April with a trip to Liverpool (14: 00 BST) while London City host Leceister (12: 00) on the same day.
