Strike partner Denis Bouanga expertly took care of the goals for him. South Korean star Son turned in a spectacular performance, conjuring four assists before departing the game in the 57th minute, with his team already cruising toward a triumph that would keep it at the top of the Western Conference with the highest points tally in the league. Five goals in the first-half also ties a league record. Son’s partnership with Bouanga, so fruitful ever since the former Tottenham standout joined last season, was again a big part of the reason why. It took just seven minutes for LAFC to take the lead, when Son burst down the right and fired in a low cross that was deflected into his own net by Orlando defender David Brekalo. Before the half-hour mark, the game was completely out of the visitors’ reach. LAFC’s second was a majestic combination of a perfect Son pass followed by a delightful chip by Bouanga over the head of goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau. In the 28th minute, some Son trickery on the edge of the box created space for him to set up Bouanga again, and the Gabon international made no mistake. For the fifth, Son’s pullback fell neatly into the stride of Sergi Palencia, who powered home a right-footed drive to pile on the misery for Orlando. Tyler Boyd would later add the sixth with 20 minutes remaining. The outcome was an ideal confidence boost for LAFC ahead of Tuesday’s first leg of a Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal against Mexico’s Cruz Azul. Spot the pattern.
