The League Two outfit sacked Darrell Clarke after Saturday's 3-0 home loss to Swindon made it 10 straight league defeats and dropped them into the relegation zone. Evans, 63, has been out of work since March when he was sacked by Rotherham. Since then, the Scot has spoken extensively about the fitness drive he has been on, shedding seven stone (44. 4kg) in weight as a result. The first match for the former Leeds United, Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Gillingham and Stevenage boss will be away to Crewe Alexandra on Friday (19: 45 GMT). Evans' assistant will be Paul Raynor, who had a loan spell with the Gas as a player in 1984.
