EPL Transfer Deadline Day live Updated 1m ago The January transfer window has closed for clubs in the Premier League. The 7pm GMT deadline has passed, but there is still time for teams in England and around Europe to get final deals over the line. Here are the headlines from the final day of the transfer window: Share your thoughts on deadline day by emailing us at live@theathletic. com. Sandro Tonali was offered to Arsenal by his agent — but there were no talks with Newcastle United and nothing will develop before Monday's transfer deadline. The Italy international's representative reached out to Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta over the 25-year-old midfielder, a player admired by Arsenal for a long period of time. Part of Berta's role is to explore such situations when they present themselves and he did so like he would any other. However, with Newcastle unwilling to do any business at this stage of the window and the theoretical asking price being far beyond Arsenal's financial capabilities the situation will not progress any further. Any discussions did not extend to club-to-club dialogue of any kind with Tonali set to remain at St James' Park. Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are “actively looking” at options following the foot injury to Mikel Merino that is set to sideline the Spain international for a considerable period. “We are on it, ” Arteta told a press conference on Monday. “It’s just the fact you want to make the right call with the right player because we really want to improve the team if we can. If not, we don’t do it. ” Aston Villa full-back Lino Sousa is in talks to join Rotherham United on loan for the remainder of the season. Sousa, who signed from Arsenal in 2024, has had loan spells away at Plymouth Argyle and Bristol Rovers, but the first six months of this season have been curtailed by injury. Having returned to fitness, the 21-year-old requires regular first-team game-time, and has received interest from clubs in League One. However, Rotherham are the most advanced in talks to sign Sousa, who has played for several of England's youth teams. Rotherham sit 20th in League One, out of the relegation zone on goal difference. The collapse of the Jean-Philippe Mateta move is not the end of the world for Milan. In its initial conception, Milan wanted Mateta for next season — the thinking being that they wouldn’t be scrambling around all summer for a striker. Niclas Fullkrug is a loan with an option. Santi Gimenez’s future was in doubt even before his surgery. The jury is still out on Christopher Nkunku who, until recently, has been an expensive flop. Mateta was theoretically a solution to the dilemma that the striker situation at the club has posed, and may continue to pose going into next summer. The focus in the off-season could have been turned to other positions. Bringing in Mateta now would perhaps have given Milan that little bit extra in the title race. The aforementioned Gimenez is out. Nkunku has been inconsistent. Christian Pulisic and Rafa Leao have both faced time on the sidelines. But Mateta was not essential. Milan, after all, are well-placed for a return to the Champions League. A striker will remain on their to-do list for the summer. As mentioned earlier, if Antoine Semenyo provided an example of how to leave a football club, Norwich City striker Josh Sargent's potential exit has been far less harmonious. Sargent, who had been voted Norwich City’s player of the season for 2024-25, was rowing with the club’s hierarchy over a transfer to MLS and had texted their head coach, telling him he would not play. That coach, Philippe Clement, had publicly insisted Sargent was not for sale, but the striker was desperate to move back to North America with Canada’s Toronto FC. Generally, players can also be guilty of poor timing. His instinct may have been impeccable in front of goal, but Jermain Defoe’s decision to ask to leave West Ham United in 2003 was a personal disaster. Defoe put in a transfer request shortly after the club had been relegated from the top flight. West Ham insisted that he stay and Defoe had to endure some frosty receptions when turning out for home games at Upton Park in the early stages of their 2003-04 Championship season, before a winter-window transfer to Tottenham Hotspur a few months later. After a stellar 2024-25 season for Norwich City and USMNT striker Josh Sargent, scoring 15 goals, interest was high from clubs looking to pluck him from the Championship. Sargent has been unsettled amid interest from MLS side Toronto FC and given MLS teams are in no rush, he could still move away from Norwich. Norwich have signed striker Mohamed Toure from Danish side Randers on a four-and-a-half-year deal in the last few days, boosting their attacking stocks in the event of Sargent's departure. Mikel Arteta was bullish in insisting that Arsenal are “on it” when it comes to scouring the market for a potential replacement for the injured Mikel Merino. With a matter of hours to go in the window, however, options are sure to be limited. Arsenal are also operating from a position of strength: with the return of Kai Havertz, they already have an impressively deep squad. To illustrate that point, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Christian Norgaard — two senior internationals — were both initially left off the substitutes’ bench at Leeds (Norgaard stepped up when Saka withdrew with injury). Simply because they are already in such a strong position. Arsenal spent in the region of £250 million last summer, assembling a formidable squad. Finding someone who can improve their options in January is not straightforward — and, having spent so heavily in the summer, there is not an unlimited budget. Mikel Arteta said Arsenal needed to do “everything we possibly can” to bolster their squad in the Spain international’s absence. “We are on it, ” Arteta said at his press conference on Monday. “It’s just the fact that you want to make the right call with the right player because we really want to improve the team if we can. If not, we don’t do it. “When you lose a big player like this in the squad with four months to go and all the competitions to play for, you need to look and we need to do everything that we possibly can to see if we have a player that is available. And if we don’t, we keep what we have. “At this level, especially for four months, you have to be a player who has the capacity to adapt immediately and impact the team. That’s not easy. So, we need to find solutions and try. ” Former Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been training with the club since November after leaving former club Besiktas in the summer. When asked about the possibility of re-signing the 32-year-old, Arteta said: “We explore every option. ” Aston Villa forward Louie Barry is set to rejoin Stockport County on loan for the remainder of the season. Barry, who had returned to Villa last month after his initial season-long loan at Sheffield United was cut short due to injury, has an excellent relationship with Stockport having scored 25 goals in 46 appearances across two loan stints at the club. The 22-year-old is currently nursing a knee injury and will remain out for another month, but Stockport are prepared to help with his recovery and ensure he can help with the club’s bid to win promotion from League One in the final weeks of the campaign. Elliot Lee, a key figure in Wrexham’s three consecutive promotions, has joined Doncaster Rovers on loan for the rest of the season. The 31-year-old heads to the League One club having found opportunities hard to come by this season at the STo K Cae Ras, his three appearances having all come in the Carabao Cup. Lee’s departure comes during a busy day of activity for Phil Parkinson, who is keen to make additions before the 7pm deadline. Barnsley’s Davis Keillor-Dunn and Bailey Cadamarteri, the Sheffield Wednesday forward, are both on Wrexham’s radar following the addition of Bristol City defender Zak Vyner on Sunday night. With one eye on the EFL stipulation that 25-man squads must be named once the window closes, the Wrexham manager was keen to get players out in January before making the necessary additions. Lee, joint top scorer last season as Wrexham finished in runners-up spot, is the fifth senior player to leave this month, following fellow three-time promotion winners Paul Mullin (Bradford City) and Andy Cannon (Burton Albion) out the door on loan. James Mc Clean (Derry City) and Jake Bickerstaff (Cheltenham Town) also left in permanent deals, while further departures could happen before the cut-off with Ryan Hardie interesting several League One clubs. Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement with Borussia Monchengladbach for the signing of left-back Luca Netz on a permanent deal. Netz, 22, is undergoing a medical ahead of the proposed move to the Premier League club and is set to sign a four-and-a-half-year contract. The Germany youth international joined Gladbach from Hertha Berlin in 2021 and has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season, providing two assists. Forest have aimed to strengthen at left-back during the January window, with Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas, on loan at Roma, previously among their list of targets. Oleksandr Zinchenko’s loan move from Arsenal was also cut short this month, and he subsequently joined Ajax. It puts Crystal Palace in an awkward position. Mateta will be difficult to reintegrate into the squad given his open and vocal desire to leave, potentially extending the toxicity and uncertainty of the whole transfer saga. It also calls into question Palace's £48m move for Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen, who is the France striker's replacement, though it isn't affecting their pursuit of the Norwegian striker. AC Milan have pulled out of a move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Athletic reported earlier on Monday that Mateta was was set to undergo further medical tests in London after the two sides agreed a deal worth more than €30million (£26m; $35. 6m) for the forward on Sunday. Those medical checks have prompted the Serie A side to walk away from the deal with other clubs now expressing interest in a possible loan for the 28-year-old before Monday night’s deadline. Mateta has been carrying a knee problem, with Palace opting to leave him out of their FA Cup third-round loss against Macclesfield, played on a 3G surface, because of issues with the joint. Mateta’s failed departure will not have an impact on Jorgen Strand Larsen’s arrival, with the Norway international’s proposed £43million plus £5m move still on as things stand. Additional reporting: James Horncastle and Matt Woosnam Aside from anything, Palace chairman Steve Parish prefers to wait until the last moments of transfer windows to do business, believing there is generally more value to be found then. In that context, the potential for several moves on deadline day makes more sense. Jean-Philippe Mateta's move to Milan (more on that shortly) remains up in the air, and therefore so does the £48m move for his replacement, Jorgen Strand Larsen of Wolves. Aside from that, Palace are looking at several players, including at centre-back given the departure of captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City earlier this month. They saw a bid rejected for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez and I would be very surprised if there are no more ins and outs at Palace before the 7pm deadline. Though there could be news shortly on a man they were expecting to leave today. .. Which transfers could still happen today? Andrew Moran is making a permanent move from Brighton to Championship side Preston North End for a £1million fee plus add-ons. The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder has been on loan previously in the second tier to Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers. He was on loan earlier this season to Los Angeles FC in MLS. Moran made three senior appearances for Brighton as a substitute after signing from Bray Wanderers in 2020. Should the deal be concluded then Jorgen Strand Larsen should be an excellent addition for Palace, given it is likely to be contingent on Jean-Philippe Mateta moving to Milan. That would ensure Palace are effectively swapping out one striker for another but paying a relatively small uplift in transfer fee. Mateta has been in poor form, albeit he is their top scorer with eight Premier League goals, he is nursing a knee problem and has wanted to leave Palace for some considerable time. Quality and proven strikers are hard to come by and although Strand Larsen has been less effective this season, he was outstanding for Wolves last year. Palace have struggled to score enough goals during their 11-game winless run in all competitions, with Mateta especially culpable. If they are to pull clear of a relegation battle then this should go some way to helping them achieve that objective, and provide quality and depth up front where it is desperately needed. Palace need ready-made players this month who can make an immediate impact, and, while he has fared worse this season, Strand Larsen should meet that criteria. Anderlecht forward Nilson Angulo is set to undergo a medical at Sunderland, while a move for Simon Adingra to Monaco is being finalised. Sunderland and Anderlecht have agreed a a fee of €17. 5million (£15. 2m; $20. 7m) + €3m in add-ons for Angulo, who can play on both the left and right flanks. The Ecuador international is undergoing a medical in Paris. The club feel that he is a good fit with the team's ambition and DNA and have been impressed with his character. He is a former team-mate of Noah Sadiki, who joined Sunderland in the summer window. Meanwhile, terms have been agreed for Adingra to sign for Monaco, with the Ivory Coast winger given permission to travel ahead of the move. Adingra joined Sunderland in the summer from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth €21m plus €3m in add-ons. Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are “actively looking” at deadline day options after midfielder Mikel Merino was ruled out for a considerable period with a suspected broken bone in his foot. The Athletic reported on Sunday Merino was set for an extended spell out and Arsenal later confirmed he would undergo surgery in the coming days. Here is what Arteta said in his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow's evening Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea. ? “We are actively looking at options. We will continue to do that. If I find a solution, we will do it, and if we don’t, we will continue. “Of course, when you lose a big player like this in the squad, you need to look and we need to do everything we possibly can to see if there’s a player which is available. “At this level you have to bring a player that has the capacity to adapt immediately and impact the team. that’s not easy — but if it was easy, we wouldn’t be here! ”
