Tottenham’s current predicament appears to be subduing the pull of playing for Roberto De Zerbi in the transfer market. Spurs are in a perilous position, now firmly in the relegation zone after De Zerbi failed to bring about a new manager bounce, with his first game in charge a slender defeat against Sunderland. The north London side have not been helped by the injuries they’ve had to deal with, and further bad luck on that front arrived this week, as it was reported that captain Cristian Romero is going to be out for the season. Guests may also enjoy live entertainment and Spurs legend appearances. That puts the side in a very difficult position, with a real chance of dropping out of England’s top tier for the first time since 1977. It’s no surprise, therefore, that that plausible outcome is making work in the transfer market difficult.

Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke is reportedly unlikely to sign a new deal with the Seagulls, and so with De Zerbi being his former boss, Spurs would seem a likely destination. According to Voetbal International, Spurs are indeed one of the sides interested in his signature, but sporting malaise at the club is said to make a deal unlikely. Chelsea and Newcastle United are two other clubs put forward by the Dutch site, and while neither are exactly where they’d want to be, they are in a better place than Spurs. Van Hecke is said to want to play at the top level in England, which appears unlikely to be Spurs’ level any time soon. The Dutchman’s contract at the Amex runs out in 2027, so if Brighton want a significant fee for him, it would likely need to come this summer.

In Four Four Two’s opinion, it’s no surprise that players are not being enticed by the prospect of signing for Spurs at the moment. Nobody can accurately predict which division they will be in next season, so until that’s confirmed, players looking for Premier League football will not be progressing any talks. Moreover, a player like Van Hecke, who is looking up rather than down, will not look at Tottenham and see a club matching his ambitions. Van Hecke is valued at €35m, according to Transfermarkt.
