Otherwise a solid B- transfer window for Nottingham Forest. Hard to do business but I think we did the right business Kevin Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20: 00 GMT) Newcastle United Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether the club came close to making any signings: "No, I think financially it wasn't possible. Right at the start of the window there may have been players we were looking at that were for the future - younger players that we could develop. But ultimately nothing happened. "I didn't think there was going to be a player coming in that was going to be for the first team. " Click 'Get Involved' to have your say It's an ungraded (U) for Newcastle due to the inertia in this window. Time will tell if our pragmatic approach proves to be a mistake noting our burgeoning injury list and difficult run of fixtures. Rachel Newcastle F MINUS MINUS
How can you make 70m profit from Isak sale and not reinvest? 70m over 5 year deal is 350m! that's what Chelsea are doing? Badly need new blood for more energy in central midfield and striker Dave Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20: 00 GMT) Newcastle United Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether he believes the squad is strong enough after the club failed to make a signing in the winter transfer window : "The squad is OK. I think if it was a fully fit squad it would be strong in all areas. Of course it's not, so we need to get our injured players back fit. Until we do that I think there will be a slight imbalance, we're certainly stretched defensively. "But of course, I am very happy with the squad when it's got a clean bill of health. Jonathan Gary Rose BBC Sport reporter The Premier League had its quietest ever winter transfer deadline day as just seven deals were completed for senior players on Monday. There were also two academy signings made - James Wilson from Hearts to Tottenham and Evan Mooney from St Mirren to Arsenal - while Liverpool's £60m deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet will not be officially completed until the summer window. Not a single arrival was confirmed until 19: 04 GMT - four minutes after the window in the English top flight closed - with Crystal Palace announcing the signing of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves in a deal worth up to £48m. Clubs can make signings for up to two hours after the official deadline, as long as a deal sheet is submitted before 19: 00 to provide extra time for the necessary paperwork to be completed. There were five further deals confirmed after the deadline - among them, Sunderland brought in Ecuador winger Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht in a deal worth £17. 5m, while Wolves signed midfielder Angel Gomes from Marseille on loan and replaced Strand Larsen with Adam Armstrong from Southampton for £7m. That took the overall spending in the Premier League during the winter window to more than £390m. Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20: 00 GMT) Ciaran Kelly BBC Sport Newcastle United reporter Newcastle United have an almighty challenge on their hands at
the Etihad. No side have ever reached a Carabao Cup final after losing
the first leg at home by two or more goals. It is a huge game for the holders. But Eddie Howe’s news conference on the eve of Wednesday’s
match is unlikely to be dominated by questions concerning Manchester City. Instead, the Newcastle head coach will also have to field a number of queries regarding the transfer window and Sandro Tonali. A report emerged on deadline day suggesting Arsenal were
exploring a move for Tonali, but Newcastle insisted the midfielder was not for
sale and that there had been no contact. Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, also denied speaking to
Arsenal but, in an interview with Sky Italy, he was asked about the club’s
valuation and said “that’s something we will do in March or April if Newcastle
are open to it”. Expect Howe to be asked about those comments and to stress
the importance of keeping hold of the club’s best players, not least after
losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer. The Newcastle head coach will also give fitness updates on
captain Bruno Guimaraes and team-mates Sven Botman and Lewis Miley, who did not feature in the defeat against Liverpool at the weekend. Chased Jacquet the whole month, who is another young player who is unproven, just to lose him to Liverpool. We didn't improve the squad but offloaded Sterling and loan Disasi. Disappointing. Jeuel Chris Sutton Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live With all that's gone on at Crystal Palace with Marc Guehi leaving and Oliver Glasner leaving at the end of the season, I think having both Jorgen Strand Larsen and Jean-Phlippe Mateta is not a bad thing. I thought they could get sucked into a relegation battle. Chris Collinson BBC football statistician Crystal Palace are the biggest expected goals (x G) underperformers in Europe's top five leagues this season. Based on the number and quality of chances they have had, a team would have scored 13 more goals than Palace have in their 24 league games (25 goals versus an x G of 38). And Mateta has been the chief culprit for their struggles in front of goal, scoring four fewer than expected - though seven other Palace players are also underperforming their x G by one goal or more. While only six players have scored more than his eight goals in the league this season, only Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago have a higher x G than Mateta (12). The silver lining for the Eagles is that in order for teams and players to massively underperform their x G, they have to be good enough to get a lot of quality chances in the first place. While you want players to take their chances, it shows that Palace and their attackers are getting a lot of things right. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say 10/10
Got a great additional attacking option in Semenyo and an excellent central defender (Guehi) at a bargain bin price (at today's fees, anyway) Eamonn City supporter here, B+ for me personally. I'm perfectly happy with the signings, Semenyo and Guehi is more than I expected. We could use a strong midfielder but that's a summer job to replace Kova and Bernardo. I was just a little disappointed we permanently offloaded a couple academy products. Harry Sami Mokbel BBC Sport Senior football correspondent Rarely has a club-record signing been met with such scepticism. Palace have spent £48million on Strand Larsen yet the jury is out. The Norway international has scored just once in the Premier League season after all. Of course, Palace are banking on last season's Strand Larsen arriving, his 14 goals last season pushed Champions League Newcastle into trying to sign him last summer. But there are supporters who still need to be convinced. Palace are in malaise. Michael Olise is gone. Eze is gone. Guehi is gone. Glasner, their manager, is leaving at the end of the season – if not before. The team is disassembling at a rate fans are apprehensive about. Last season's euphoric FA Cup triumph seems a distant memory; the club's spiral towards the relegation zone is in stark contrast to the jubilation of nine months ago. Whether Strand Larsen is the man to inject some positivity back into Selhurst Park remains to be seen. The addition of Johnson will provide further options for an attack that has misfired in recent weeks, but the late saga around Mc Neil will have done little to ease concern. Uncertainty reigns at Palace - can the new signings provide some direction? Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Everton - C. Glad they didn’t recklessly spend unnecessarily however a couple of loan deals would have been nice. Shame we couldn’t get rid of Mc Neil. George adds welcomed pace, but really could have done with a full back at least. Graham Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say A Spurs fan here, absolutely awful. 1/10. With the current injuries and barely able to field a team and having to put children on the bench, it speaks incompetence of the highest levels. At the very least you get loan players in for 6 months. Mo Arguably the biggest move of deadline day was Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen making the move to Crystal Palace. But it has been a season to forget so far for the striker. He has only one Premier League goal in 22 outings for an out-of-sorts Wolves side, who are bottom of the table and 18 points from safety. But Palace will be hoping the Norway forward will replicate the form that saw him net 14 times in 35 outings for the Midlands club last term before making a loan move from Celta Vigo permanent. "I'm really excited to come to Crystal Palace, " said Strand Larsen. "It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time now. "I'm here to bring energy and goals, and to try to do my best for the club. " Copyright © 2026 BBC. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.
