Mike, Shropshire Man Utd 0-0 Bayern Munich We're under way at Old Trafford. The first ever meeting between Manchester United and Bayern Munich women. Which way is it going to go? Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Manchester United Manchester United boss Marc Skinner speaking to Disney+: "It is about riding the moments of momentum. We know that they will create and we will create. It is respecting but not being in fear or in awe of them. "We believe in ourselves. We are not here by luck. We are here by hard work, graft and commitment and we have to put that on the field tonight. We have to not play second best in our minds, if we can do that then we can give them a real good game. " Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Simon Stone BBC Sport Manchester United reporter at Old Trafford A rendition of Take Me Home Country Road from the home fans before tonight's game. They are up for this. I hope Marc Skinner's team is. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) "Let's go, " shouts Melvine Malard after the Champions League anthem rings out. They're pumped for this one. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Manchester United Manchester United boss Marc Skinner speaking to Disney+: "I'm really excited. We are at a fantastic arena full of history, especially in the Champions League for the men's team. We are the only team in the quarter-finals that wasn't in the quarter-finals last year, so we have already created history. "What I want to see tonight is for us to express ourselves. We don't have to prove anything, just express who we are, and it will be an exciting game I'm sure. " On Schuller facing her former team: "She will be incredibly important. Her intel, she knows how they play, will hopefully be a little bit of an advantage. Terri [Terland]has been fantastic for us, but because of the amount of games in succession she drops to the bench tonight but is obviously ready to come in. Hinata comes back in to the line-up, again her incredible connection to the team. We have to be at our best and we are playing an incredible team. We are looking forward to the challenge. " Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Nedum Onuoha Former Manchester City defender on Disney+ Manchester United did very well in the league phase considering it is their very first time doing so, and to score the goals and win as convincingly as they did against Atletico, they very much deserve to be in this position. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Simon Stone BBC Sport Manchester United reporter at Old Trafford It is just over eight years since Manchester United
confirmed their intention to launch a women’s team and made their request to join
the second tier. One of United’s reasons for not joining the Women’s Super
League sooner was because they felt it needed to be sure of competing at the highest
levels of the game. They have virtually got there. Certainly, they have
established themselves in the top four in England. Tonight is the start of their biggest European test; a
two-legged encounter with a Bayern side unbeaten in the German league, where
they have 19 wins and one draw from 20 matches. In between they face WSL
leaders Manchester City at Old Trafford as they battle to try and secure a
return to the Champions League next season. It’s a tough schedule. But coach Marc Skinner says it is
what the club have been striving for since its inception. “We want to be in the latter stages of the Champions League, ”
he said. “We want to be in the latter stages challenging for the league and reaching
cup finals. “I think it says a lot about the growth of our team. “Look, we get a lot of pressure if we don't get over the
line, but nobody ever measures the distance we've grown as a team. “It's probably one of the best growths that you've ever seen
in a sports team in such a short time. ” Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Manchester United have a pretty mammoth task ahead of them over these two legs. Bayern Munich have only lost once this season across all competitions. That was in their first Champions League match - a 7-1 thrashing by Barcelona. But since then, they've gone on a 22-match unbeaten run and they've won their last 10 games in a row. Talk about form. Click 'Get Involved' on this page to have your say Manchester United Women have grown this season into a very resilient team, and are strengthened tonight by experienced European campaigners Rolfo and Schueller. Bayern missing Klara Buhl tonight gives United a great chance to win this leg. Gordon, Aberdeen Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Nedum Onuoha Former Manchester City defender on Disney+ You think it is going to be a big motivating factor for Lea Schuller playing against her former side. She is the person that understands more so than probably anybody how Bayern want to play because she was part of their long term ambition to win this competition. These stories are what make this game so beautiful sometimes. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Simon Stone BBC Sport Manchester United reporter at Old Trafford The darkest day in Manchester United's history happened in Munich in 1958, when a place carrying Matt Busby and his team crashed following a refueling stop on the way back from a European Cup quarter-final in Belgrade in 1958. Eight players were among the 23 who died that day and the link between United and Munich's most famous club endures. "There is a deep respect between these two clubs that goes beyond the pitch, " he explains in his programme notes. "That respect is clear in how Bayern pay tribute to those lost in the Munich Air Disaster on its anniversary - something that means so much to everyone connected to Manchester United. " Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Manchester United's Julia Zigiotti and Fridolina Rolfo both had spells at Bayern Munich, too. Zigiotti made 16 league appearances for the German side last season, while Rolfo spent nearly three years at the club and scored 18 league goals before moving to rivals Wolfsburg in 2019. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Plenty of familiar faces for Lea Schuller tonight. The German international spent more than five years with Bayern Munich and scored 103 goals for the club before join Manchester United in the winter transfer window. She hasn't had quite the same success yet in front of goal for United, scoring just once, and that was on her debut against Burnley in the FA Cup. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Nedum Onuoha Former Manchester City defender on Disney+ This is one of the most significant and famous stadiums in all of football, so any time you get the chance to play here it is incredible. When you are doing so in big competitions, that is something you will always remember. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Simon Stone BBC Sport Manchester United reporter at Old Trafford I am hearing of what eye-witnesses are calling 'massive' queues outside Old Trafford with fans wanting to get into the stadium. Man Utd are used to dealing with big crowds, so it is not entirely clear what the problem is. Fans queue outside Old Trafford before Man Utd v Bayern Munich Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Jen Beattie Former Scotland defender on BBC Women's Football Weekly I do think the Wolfsburg and Lyon league phase fixtures were big wake up calls for them. That was the beauty of the league phase they were going to come up against giants early on, and for them to have those key tests was massive, so then they come up against Atletico Madrid and they bypassed that pretty straightforwardly. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Ellen White Former England striker on BBC Women's Football Weekly podcast It's a difficult one for Manchester United because it feels like they are constantly having to prove that they are up there with the top four [in the WSL]. They may not have as much funding or backing but they are constantly right there. They don't quite get over the line against Chelsea, they lose against Wolfsburg, who are massive titans in European football, as are Lyon. Putting themselves up against these teams is really important for their experience. This is their debut season in the Champions League so it is all about gaining experience and pitting themselves against the best and I think that they have more than proved themselves. Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) Simon Stone BBC Sport Manchester United reporter at Old Trafford Manchester United started out on their Champions League
journey way back on 27 August, when they beat PSV Eindhoven in a second qualifying
round tie in Sweden. Given that victory earned a ‘final’ against mini-group hosts
Hammarby, who have reached the semi-final of the Europa Cup, it wouldn’t have
been that much of a surprise if United’s campaign had ended at two games. Instead, they won, thanks to a second-half goal from Elisabeth
Terland, and advanced past Brann, into the main draw, and then overcame Atletico
Madrid over two legs to make it out of the play-offs and into the last eight. Tonight, Bayern Munich come to Old Trafford for a
mouthwatering first leg quarter final that ranks among the biggest games the women’s
team has ever played. “We're in this strange paradigm as a Manchester United team, ”
said head coach Marc Skinner. “Of course, we accept the excellent journey we've been on. But
we’re at a stage where you don't just turn up and go ‘ah brilliant, we enjoyed
the ride’. “We appreciate how far we've come. It's a reflection point
for after the season finishes, but while you're in it, we are looking forward
to two magical nights of football at Old Trafford and the Allianz Arena. “We are going to put on a performance. ” Man Utd v Bayern Munich (20: 00 GMT) This is Manchester United's debut season in the Women's Champions League and I think it's fair to say it's been a bit up and down. After storming past PSV and SK Brann in qualifying, their league phase got off to the perfect start with 1-0 wins against Valerenga and Atletico Madrid. Marc Skinner's side then claimed an impressive victory against Paris St-Germain, but their 100% record came to an abrupt end as challenging on all fronts started to take its toll. Wolfsburg overwhelmed them in 5-2 win, while Lyon ran out 3-0 winners at Leigh Sports Village. A narrow victory over Juventus saw United qualify for the knockout round play-off, where they coolly moved past Atletico 5-0 on aggregate to reach the last eight. Can they go another step further? This video can not be played Man Utd come from behind twice but lose first leg to Bayern At a glance Former Chelsea forward Pernille Harder puts Bayern ahead after two minutes Man Utd captain Maya Le Tissier levels from the spot Harder restores Bayern lead in second half before Hanna Lundkvist levels Momoko Tanikawa nets first-leg winner PLAYER RATER Manchester United fan Pernille Harder scored twice at Old Trafford against the club she grew up supporting as Bayern Munich gained a precious first-leg advantage in their Champions League quarter-final tie. Although United fought back from both of Harder's strikes, they had no answer when substitute Momoko Tanikawa drove a precise shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area six minutes from time. It was harsh on Marc Skinner's side, who showed the resilience to fight back from conceding after just two minutes and then came up with an immediate response after Harder had scored for a second time. However, they paid a heavy price for conceding those two routine goals, with former Chelsea forward Harder exploiting the home side's high defensive line on both occasions before outpacing Maya Le Tissier and then applying the cool finish. United captain Le Tissier levelled the opener from the penalty spot after Glodis Viggosdottir handled Lea Schuller's cross. Then, just five minutes after Harder had scored her second, Hanna Lundkvist found the net with a close-range header. Bayern had the final word though, leaving United with a tough task to overturn the German side's advantage at Allianz Arena on 1 April. Pernille Harder (left) scored the first of her night's two goals in the second minute Sometimes it is easy to forget how relatively new Manchester United are to the women's game. They only announced an intention to join the English second tier in 2018, after years of being criticised for failing to have a women's team. While United were winning the Women's Championship in 2018-19, Bayern were charging to the Champions League last four, where they were beaten by Barcelona. United simply do not have the history their name suggests, which was probably a reason why they looked so spooked by conceding such an early opener, so early. In fact, the scoreboard was still going through the teams as Harder's shot nestled in the bottom corner. Their stressed and hurried play was epitomised by Millie Turner, normally such a calm figure. Trying to play a routine pass back to goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce from just inside her own half, under little pressure, she ballooned it out for a corner. A second for Bayern in that period would have been calamitous. But the hosts held on and by the time Le Tissier levelled, they looked the more dangerous side. Sadly, their threat didn't materialise into a goal until after Harder had got her second. Lundkvist's header in a crowded six-yard box seemed as though it would salvage a draw and give Skinner's team genuine hope in Munich next week. But United lacked the game nous to see out a draw. Hinata Miyazawa - one of Japan's Asian Cup-winning heroes, who had dashed back to play for United - was among the frustrated home players as her international team-mate Tanikawa, who didn't get off the bench in the final against Australia, had the final word. Manchester United are back at Old Trafford on Saturday, 28 March for a Women's Super League encounter with leaders Manchester City (13: 30 GMT). They go to Germany for the return encounter with Bayern on Wednesday, 1 April (17: 45 BST).
