Alexander Isak is training alone at former club Real Sociedad amid intense links to Liverpool, talk SPORT understands. The striker has told Newcastle he wants to explore his options away from the club this summer. Isak did not travel with the Magpies to Singapore for their pre-season tour amid speculation over an exit. Liverpool are heavily interested in the Sweden international, who has been set a price tag of £150million. Newcastle are understood to be aware of the situation regarding his training in Spain. Isak spent three seasons at Sociedad, scoring 44 goals in 132 matches. He then signed for Newcastle for a reported £63million in 2022 and has since netted 62 times for the club. talk SPORT understands Sociedad will be set to earn ten per cent of the transfer fee from any deal. Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal are another club thought to be keen on signing Isak this summer. Newcastle will be ready to play hardball as the 25-year-old has three years left on his contract. A key component of the summer saga is that Isak is yet to submit an official transfer request. But talk SPORT understands Newcastle would rather negotiate a move away from the Premier League should he submit a request. Whilst Newcastle will be disappointed that Isak is interested in leaving, Michael Owen has jumped to the defence of the Swede. The ex-Magpies striker has offered a player's perspective of the saga amid a summer where the club have missed out on various targets. "If any decent player becomes available, the big boys come and eventually they move, " Owen told talk SPORT Breakfast. "It's sad because you want competition in football. "But you put yourself in a player's point of view. If you didn't have ambition, then football would be nothing. "You've got one short career trying to win as much as you can, trying to get to the best team. "That's what drives everybody. People will say it's money, it's not. "Most footballers just want to be in the best teams, in the best competitions and winning trophies. "Unfortunately, this scenario will never, ever change. " Hugo Ekitike, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo are some of the targets that Newcastle have failed to sign. Anthony Elanga remains as their most notable arrival after his £55m move from Nottingham Forest. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
