England's opening matches of their 2027 World Cup qualifying campaign have, overall, been a success. A 6–1 victory over Ukraine in Turkey was backed up by a 2–0 win against Iceland at a sold-out City Ground in Nottingham. The Ukraine win saw two goals apiece for Alessia Russo, Georgia Stanway and Jess Park in a dominant display that has set the tone for the qualification campaign. Stanway was again on the scoresheet against Iceland, alongside Lucy Bronze. But now the challenge steps up. Sarina Wiegman’s side face Spain - the team they defeated on penalties in the Euro 2025 final. However, it was Spain who came out on top on the biggest stage at the 2023 World Cup, beating England in the final in Australia. The Lionesses currently sit top of a difficult qualifying group on goal difference, ahead of Spain by two goals, making this a crucial tie. Automatic qualification is only awarded to the team that finishes top of the group, although as a League A nation, England are at least guaranteed a play-off place for next year's tournament in Brazil. Despite being back-to-back European champions, England are ranked fourth in the world, with Spain, the reigning world champions, sitting first. Captain Leah Williamson is in the squad but despite missing Arsenal's recent run of games with a hamstring injury. Notable absentees include Manchester United's Ella Toone, still sidelined with a hip issue, and Manchester City's Grace Clinton with a "lower body injury. " There are also fresh faces in the camp, with 17-year-old Erica Meg Parkinson and 20-year-old Keira Barry receiving their first senior call-ups, although both are unlikely to feature against Spain. The match will mark the Lionesses' 499th fixture, with their milestone 500th set to come in Reykjavik against Iceland on Saturday.
