Wojciech Szczesny reversed his retirement to join Barcelona in 2024 Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has renewed his contract with Barcelona until 2027. The Polish keeper, 35, had retired from football in August 2024, but signed for Barca two months later after first choice Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a season-ending injury. Szczesny won the La Liga and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona, who said that his contract was "recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context". Germany keeper Ter Stegen suffered a ruptured tendon in his knee in September 2024 and only returned to training in the final weeks of the 2024-25 season. Szczesny's new deal raises questions surrounding Ter Stegen's future at Barca after Barcelona also signed Joan Garcia from Espanyol in June, while 26-year-old Spanish keeper Inaki Pena is also on their books. Szczesny made 181 appearances for Arsenal after joining as a 16-year-old and also spent time at Brentford, Roma and Juventus. He joined Italian giants Juve in 2017 and made 252 appearances across seven years in Turin, winning three Serie A titles and lifting the Coppa Italia three times. Szczesny won 84 caps for Poland, playing at four European Championships and two World Cups.
