Danny Welbeck's first-half penalty put the Seagulls in charge after Matheus Cunha had conceded the spot-kick and though Wolves pushed for a leveller, Brajan Gruda came off the bench to dink the ball over Jose Sa and make it two late in the game. The victory moves Fabian Hurzeler's men up to ninth in the table, behind Brentford on only goal difference. For Vitor Pereira's Wolves, it is back-to-back defeats following their club-record run of six consecutive Premier League wins. They remain in 14th place. Wolves: Sa (6), Doherty (6), Agbadou (6), Toti (6), Semedo (6), J Gomes (6), Andre (7), Ait-Nouri (7), Munetsi (5), Cunha (5), Guedes (5).
Subs: R Gomes (6), Sarabia (6), Bellegarde (6), Strand Larsen (6), Mane (n/a).
Brighton: Verbruggen (7), Lamptey (7), Van Hecke (8), Webster (7), Estupinan (6), Baleba (6), Wieffer (8), Minteh (6), O'Riley (6), Ayari (6), Welbeck (8).
Subs: Gruda (7), Adingra (7), Mitoma (n/a), Gomez (n/a), Hinshelwood (n/a).
Player of the Match: Danny Welbeck. It was Cunha's lackadaisical error that led to the breakthrough goal, dispossessed on the edge of his own area by Mats Wieffer before adding to the mistake by bringing the Brighton player down. Welbeck sent Sa the wrong way from the penalty spot. Welbeck was unfortunate to have been denied the opener just before as his close-range effort was ruled out because team-mate Yankuba Minteh had attempted to get a foot to it too from an offside position as the ball crept beyond Sa and into the net. Wolves were a little loose in their play and though Goncalo Guedes had a couple of good openings with the game goalless, they moved the ball too slowly to penetrate - and when they did there was the impressive Jan Paul van Hecke at the back to clear. Gruda added gloss to the victory with the first Premier League goal of his career when fellow substitute Simon Adingra slid the ball into his path for him to finish cleverly. With the potential for eight European places this season, Brighton's season is far from over.

Welbeck has now scored 10 goals in a Premier League season for the first time in his career. Asked whether he was surprised by that afterwards, Hurzeler said: "First of all, I need to thank the medical department, because they made it happen that Danny is on the pitch. " The Brighton boss added: "Danny never played so many minutes for us in the season, so that's the first thing. The second thing, I always emphasise that Danny is an unbelievable role model for everyone, especially for the young players. "He supports them, he helps them on the pitch, beside the pitch. On top of that, he's a great goalscorer. He proved it this season so far, so I'm very happy that he's in our team. " Wieffer endured one of the most awkward moments of his Brighton career in the reverse fixture against Wolves in October, surrendering possession in a five-against-one situation late on only to see Cunha go up the other end and score an equaliser. This was revenge of sorts. It was Wieffer's pressing that dispossessed Cunha before drawing a foul from the striker, winning the penalty from which Danny Welbeck fired Brighton ahead. The Seagulls went on to win 2-0 - keeping that advantage this time. Asked about Wieffer afterwards, Hurzeler said: "Mats Wieffer had an impressive game. He was very stable defensively. He had good moments in high pressure and also in possession he was good. Regarding the penalty, he did a good job with high pressure. " Wieffer also made nine tackles in the game, more than anyone else on the pitch and three times as many as any of his Brighton team-mates. The Dutchman is a natural midfielder but excelled at right-back. And now has better memories of playing against Wolves. Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira speaking in the press conference: "Second half, we start playing with our heart. We lost our tactical organisation. We lost the pace. We start to play a game, a transition game, with mistakes. With an open game, unpredictable. And the game became a physical game in the end. "Sometimes I understand that we follow the stadium. When we try to make good decisions with the ball, we need to slow down to accelerate in the right moments. But sometimes we follow, especially the players inside the pitch. "They follow the energy to go fast. And we start to lose the tactical control of the game. And the game became unpredictable. And they are strong. They are fast. We expose ourselves in counter-attacks and they score. "Second half, it was a completely unpredictable game. With an open game, this is not the kind of game that I like. I don't like it. It's physical, physical. Transitions and transitions. "We lose the ball, they counter-attack. When they lose the ball, we counter-attack. They come again, we go again, attack like tennis. He added: "It was the first match that I watched my team playing like this, in an open game, running, running, running, without organisation, without tactical intelligence.
