Manchester United 0-0 Arsenal It is a bright start from the hosts and Ella Toone twists and turns and tries to find a pass to Melvine Malard, only for it to be intercepted. Rachel Brown-Finnis Former England goalkeeper on BBC One I'm going to miss his honesty, his effervescence, the way he stepped up and down the touchline barking his orders. His passion was sincere from the very beginning, from when this was a part-time game - to where he's left it today. Manchester United 0-0 Arsenal An early chance for the hosts, but Melvine Malard's shot on goal inside the opening 60 seconds is parried by Daphne van Domselaar. Manchester United 0-0 Arsenal Steph Houghton Former Manchester City captain on BBC One Melvine Malard has been consistent in the first two games. Four goals in two games and she is getting herself in good positions. That's why they have been in such good form this season so far. Manchester United 0-0 Arsenal We are under way at the Leigh Sports Village. If either side can win this one, they will end the day on top of the WSL table. As at the two WSL matches earlier today, there has been a minute's silence in memory of Matt Beard. And just like earlier on, it was observed perfectly. Manchester United v Arsenal (14: 50 BST) Fara Williams Former Arsenal midfielder on BBC One This Man Utd team - we know in recent seasons how well they've defended. It was really comfortable for London City Lionesses defenders to keep their shape against Arsenal. And Arsenal did the same thing against West Ham. But once Arsenal start to rotate their front four, they create chances. It really unsettles and disjoints their opposition's back lines. If Arsenal are going to unsettle Manchester United, they need to do it in the opening 20 minutes - not after going a goal behind. Manchester United v Arsenal (14: 50 BST) Steph Houghton Former Manchester City captain on BBC One We're all deeply shocked at the news, it is absolutely heartbreaking for his wife Debbie, his son Harry and daughter Ellie. It's so heartbreaking. He has left a huge impact on women's football from what he did at numerous clubs. When women's football was just starting, he was a key figure who coached a lot for unbelievable players. When you played against him you could see his personality and want to win. The most important thing is him as a human being, he would ask about your family after the game and showing his love. His selfless nature stands out for me and he is going to be massively missed. From all of us at BBC, we give our love to his family and his loved ones. Manchester United v Arsenal (14: 50 BST) Fara Williams Former Arsenal midfielder on BBC One It's a tough day. I tried to speak a bit about him Matt Beard earlier. It's difficult. He meant so much to all of us. He will be missed. Arsenal Arsenal manager Renee Slegers speaking to BBC Sport about the death of Matt Beard: "All very shocked and saddened by the sad news we got last night. I met him a couple of times, such a warm man. Hearing from everyone who knew him, what he meant to people, how much he cared, it's really sad. " On what she expects from the match: "Manchester United will play with a lot of intensity. They will come out and play and we have to face that. We have a plan for it, but we have to play the game ahead of us and play our game for big phases in the game. " On trying to not concede first again: "We've spoken about it internally. The team has shown a lot of strength coming back. In big games against good opposition, momentum will shift. It's about how you deal with those moments and the team who does that best today will have the best opportunity to win. " FT: Chelsea 1-0 Leicester City Chelsea Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor speaking to Sky Sports: "We had a strong start, we were able to score - that's really important. Of the whole performance, we have room for improvement for sure in this game. This is normal, it's early in the season. I've been changing systems, I've been trying things out and maybe the team is missing a little bit of connection. Maybe you could see that in the game today. In football, the most important thing is to win. We will work out how to make sure we are in a better place. " On the changes in system she is trying: "Depending on how we want to play, I think we have different options, a back four, a back three. The main thinking is about the space on the pitch. All of the staff and players need to understand the space and how to use them in the game. The Leicester keeper had a great performance. And when you are only winning 1-0 you give opportunities to the opposition, which is difficult. " On the changes she made at half time: "I think I was trying to analyse what the game was asking us to do. From last weekend and this weekend, we needed to have more speed in the game. Alyssa [Thompson] is strong in that aspect. I know she prefers to play on the right, but she's comfortable on the left and she is strong there too. " On match-winner Aggie Beever-Jones: "Confidence is the crucial factor for Aggie. She has a lot of quality. I already said that from last season. She's starting strong again and, as an individual player, she has a lot of quality, out of possession but also on the ball, she can run in from behind. She's a complete player, and confident to score. It's great for us and the team. " On getting better: "Always, we push for more. In this club we are all on the same page. At the end I told players we had room for improvement, but I knew they knew already. We won the game which is important, but in terms of performance we need to improve. We have higher standsads. From Tuesday, we start again and make sure we improve. " Manchester United Manchester United boss Marc Skinner speaking to BBC Sport about Matt Beard: "He is a special man. Firstly I want to send my love to Debbie, to Harry and Ellie and the rest of Matt's family. We have two members of staff that recently worked with Matt. Everyone is devastated. The football family is devastated. I want to remember an icon. I think he is as iconic as Emma [Hayes] is in the game. He has helped women's football for a long, long time. He has come from grassroots all the way up. In this sad, sombre moment it is nice to reflect on a beautiful human and somebody that I was very fond of. "I had the very great pleasure of playing against him many times. We will reflect ad if there is any support we can offer the family of course we would love to do so. I hope the women's football family comes together and in general the football family to celebrate a wonderful human and somebody I know will live long in the memory of everybody. Rather than the sadness, congratulations on the life you had. You have touched many people and your memory will live long and forever. " On today's game: "It was late last night that the news broke. Players right now are in game mode so you don't know how they are going to react, as management you don't know how you are going to react. It is still a football match and a high level one at that. We have to give it out all. We have come off a wonderful high in the week and want to give a good account of ourselves. It will be a test for us, but we will use the professionalism today to try and get through the game and reflect going into the next week on what it looks like and how we can support further. " Comment at the top of this page, Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Matt Beard, such a sad loss of a great man. Tope Matt was such a great guy. I volunteered at Chelsea when he was manager there. He would come round and see each and everyone of us both before and after each game. On occasions he would cheekily ask us about team selection if things weren't going too well. RIP Matt. Chris Manchester United v Arsenal (14: 50 BST) Emma Sanders BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at Leigh Sports Village Marc Skinner makes two changes to the Manchester United team who beat Brann on Thursday night to book their place in the main draw for the Women's Champions League. Celin Bizet, who was left out of the squad for that game as a precaution, comes straight back into the starting XI. It hat-trick hero Elisabeth Terland who gives way for her. Fridolina Rolfo also replaces Jayde Riviere, who went off injured in that match. Manchester United XI: Tullis-Joyce, Sandberg, Le Tissier, Toone, Park, Malard, Rolfo, Bizet, Janssen, Zigiotti, Miyazawa. Subs: Middleton-Patel, Rendell, George, Anderson, Griffiths, Naalsund, Terland, Williams. There are two changes to the Arsenal side who beat West Ham in their last match. Olivia Smith has come in for Beth Mead, while Stina Blackstenius replaces Frida Maanum. Smith was signed by former Liverpool manager Matt Beard and played under him with the Reds. Arsenal XI: Van Domselaar, Fox, reid, Catley, Mc Cabe, Little, Caldentey, Russo, Smith, Foord, Blackstenius. Subs: Zinsberger, Wubben-Moy, Codina, Hinds, Cooney-Cross, Pelova, Maanum, Mead, Kelly. FT: Brighton 4-1 West Ham West Ham United West Ham forward Viviane Asseyi speaking to WSL: "We wanted to win but this loss is a difficult one. We worked hard all week and this is what happens when you are playing the best league in the world. We take the positives and we will never give up. It's a hard one today but you always have to keep in mind you can be better. " On her goal: "I'm not thinking about my goal. My priority is to win games with my team and to score goals but for winning. Personally as a striker it is good but today I am not thinking about myself. I put the team first and I wanted to win today. " FT: Chelsea 1-0 Leicester City Chelsea Chelsea's Keira Walsh, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a difficult game. Leicester made it tough for us. We would have liked to have had more control, for large parts of the game we weren't in control. And that's what we want to do this season. But credit to Leicester - they made it difficult for us today. We look at previous years, Leicester have sat in lower and soaked up the pressure. Today they came out, they came to play. We'll go back to the drawing board, and have a look at how we could've found spaces better. Their keeper made some incredible saves, as well. " On playing with match-winner Aggie Beever-Jones: "It takes some of the pressure off everyone else. Her stats are incredible. It's not common to be so composed in front of goal at such a young age. She's a great character to have in the squad, an incredible person away from the pitch. " On the return of Sam Kerr to Kingsmeadow: "She's a massive, massive character. You only have to look at what she's done in the women's game, and for this team. You can feel the lift having her back in the changing room, in the gym. We have two world class strikers - we normally have three, with Mayra [Ramirez] as well. Having goalscorers take the pressure off the rest of us. " On the death of Matt Beard: "It's incredibly sad news. Obviously my thoughts go out to his family. He's had an incredible impact on women's game. He was so passionate about the women's game. It's a really, really tough loss. " FT: Brighton 4-1 West Ham Brighton & Hove Albion Brighton manager Dario Vidosic speaking to WSL: "We had to learn today. Being 2-0 up at half-time, we spoke what we wanted to do and we lost that a little bit and the penalty shook us. It took us a little bit of time to settle back into the game. "The third goal did help but we were trying to get that first win of the season. We started to make a few mistakes that we didn't make in the first half. Overall very pleased against a tough outfit in West Ham. Good three points, plenty to learn from and now we look forward to a tough week now with the League Cup coming up on Wednesday. On West Ham's pressure: "We expected that with the changes they made. The solutions were there but it is just something that we need to learn from. For a young group, they will take plenty of learning and confidence from this and scoring four goals. We would have liked more control in the final third but overall very pleasing. " Manchester United v Arsenal (14: 50 BST) BBC Two Two of the league's heavyweights meet later this afternoon when Manchester United host Arsenal. Both sides have won all of their games so far this season. You will be able to watch that one live on BBC Two, the BBC i Player and at the top of this page. FT: Brighton 4-1 West Ham Brighton & Hove Albion Brighton forward Rosa Kafaji speaking to WSL: "It was a very good [performance], I think we deserved this win. " On her goal: "I have been training a lot so I was just happy to get a goal and take three points for the team. Very nice feeling, a lot of different feelings actually but mostly happiness. " On the whole team performance: "We did a very good game today from the start to the end and we really deserved this win. " Last Updated 21st September 2025 at 14: 50 Please Note: All times UK.
