Spurs recently finalised a hefty £52 million deal for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, closely following the free transfer of of Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth. According to King, these moves are designed to replace Romero’s volatile profile in the backline. Atletico Madrid have been long interested in signing the defender with Diego Simeone a big fan of his compatriot. Barcelona have also been linked with Romero, with Deco keen on signing the Spurs star. Meanwhile, Real Madrid who have also been long interested in signing him, have once again been linked, with new boss Jose Mourinho keen on raiding his former club to sign the Argentine.

He's Agreed to Join: Tottenham Preparing Offer to Sign Rafael Leao

Preparing Offer to Sign Rafael Leao Tottenham Hotspur have already completed six signings in what has been a remarkable summer transfer window to date, but they are far from being finished. Tottenham completed the impressive free transfer signings of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi early on, with the experienced Premier League duo joined by Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka as Roberto De Zerbi completely reshapes his defensive line. With half-a-dozen new faces arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, departures are also expected following successive 17th-place finishes in the English top flight, with Cristian Romero, Luka Vuskovic, Richarlison and Djed Spence among the players who could complete transfers away from north London. Tottenham's new transfer focus in terms of incomings is now further forward, as they look to bolster a frontline that will be without Randal Kolo Muani next term following a disappointing season-long loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain. According to journalist Daniele Longo, Leao is willing to wait for a move to Tottenham this summer and is ready to say yes to linking up with De Zerbi in the English capital.

Ashley Phillips Will Probably 'Never Play for Tottenham Again'

The biggest focus around Tottenham in this summer transfer window is the fact they have been the busiest Premier League club by signing six new players, all while breaking their transfer record twice to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United, and then Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. Spurs chiefs are showing De Zerbi that they mean business ahead of next season, and more new additions will be on the way in the frontline too, with Manchester City winger Savinho and Bournemouth striker Eli Junior Kroupi two of their top targets in attack. Guglielmo Vicario, Djed Spence, Cristian Romero, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray, Richarlison and Manor Solomon are just some of the first-team players linked with moves away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while some younger players could also leave. Tottenham signed the highly-rated Ashley Phillips for a fee in the region of £2m from Blackburn Rovers in 2023, but the 21-year-old has never made a senior first-team appearance for Spurs. It is a feeling backed up by Gold who, after seeing another promising young centre-back in Vuskovic leave, believes the same fate may be facing the Manchester-born defender. The Netherlands international has been linked with the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona in recent months, but Spurs and De Zerbi have made it clear that he is going nowhere. The Italian is said to see the Dutchman as a vital piece of his Spurs rebuild, and the player himself has actually been open to extending his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium rather than seeking a move away, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.

Romano also reports that Inter have followed the Argentina international and held discussions regarding a possible move. talkSPORT has similarly reported that Barcelona would be Romero’s preferred destination, although Atlético Madrid and Inter remain interested. Spurs are not under pressure to accept a cut-price offer. Sky Sports confirmed in August 2025 that Romero signed a new four-year contract running until 2029. However, Spurs must demand a substantial fee.

Romero and Spence are perhaps not two names at the top of the list that fans would ideally see leave, but perhaps a major revamp in all areas wouldn’t be the worst idea. Romero has been offered as option during talks for Djed Spence. Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust THFC have already made changes in defence by bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke, who could be an ideal replacement for Romero in that position. Spence, meanwhile, will be an interesting one to watch as his fine form for England at this summer’s World Cup will no doubt lead to more suitors emerging soon, while there might even be an argument that Spurs should reconsider his future and keep him around instead.
